So, I had a great idea the other day to affix tiles to the back of my 55 gallon tank for a unique diy background. I was initially concerned about the possibility of the stone tiles leeching excessive amounts of minerals into the water, but I figured sealing them would help. I got a few pieces of actual slate 12x12 tile and a few smaller 6x6 ceramic tiles. When I lifted all of these pieces together, I realized how heavy they truly were, and a new issue arose. Would attaching the tiles directly to the glass have a negative impact on the structural stability of the tank itself? Would it stress the pane too much, and cause any problems?
And for a final opinion on the stone itself. Is slate a safe stone to use in a tank? And what about black river rocks? Thanks!

they are most likely going to fall off as the weight would be too much and by the way slate does not leech anything it is aquarium safe

Black river rocks are perfect for tanks. Not sure about slate though.

Maybe you could make a panel that could be affixed to the outside of the tank back and you could sitll have the look you want without the other safety issues.

Thanks everybody! And thanks Chickey, I was actually thinking a bit earlier today about making a panel to attach to the outside, erasing my concerns, and giving me the benefit of being able to change it up should I choose. Basically, I want to achieve a very zen far eastern effect to really highlight the qualities of my goldies, and stone tiles seemed to fit. All the overpriced tank backgrounds you get in stores don't really speak to me, and although cool, a styrofoam background can take up a lot of room, plus I don't have the time or resources to work on it (resources being roommates who understand, lol). Thanks again! Cody

actually i have one of those styrofoam backgrounds they are actually made from fiber glass

and they take up very little room under 1% of water volume in my tank is gone i counted when i filled it up i lost one litre and that is not much on a 60gal tank
