So its been a week since i relocated the 2 fantails. Ive took 20 gal. out on my weekly water change. ever since the ammonia has leveled out at 1 ppm. I also cleaned out my filters ( the floss was black

) I usually only cleaned them out once a month, but thinking about more often...how long should i wait for the 1 ppm ammonia to go a away before considering keeping only three goldies in the tank?

temporarly ive put 2 orandas in a 29 gal, and now have 3 in the 55.

First, you should rinse your filter with every weekly water change. You change them about once a month, maybe more, maybe less, depending on your load. That way, they won't get so black. And, your water will be healthier. You ask how long you should wait for the ammonia to go away before considering keeping three fish in the tank. Well, if your tank has only been cycling one week, you still have a way to go. It's at least 4 weeks and can take 6-8 weeks. Are you testing for, or prepared to test for nitrites and nitrates? Because, after your ammonia goes away, you will see a spike in your nitrites, which are almost as bad as the ammonia. As the nitrites decrease, you'll see a spike in the nitrates. You need to have your ammonia and nitrites read 0 ppm. There are different opinions on what nitrates should read. Some say 25 ppm is maximum, some say 5 or 10, but definitely, even nitrates need to read as low as possible before you can consider a tank cycled. Once it is cycled, it is best not to add more fish for about a month, just so that you can be sure everything has really stabilize. So, it's going to be probably a couple of months before you can add another fish.

i thought that might be the case! cycling...

my nitrite is 0 and nitrate is 40 (ppm). in the beggining when i had 6 goldies in the 55 gal, the nirite was 1 ppm.. but its zero now. in fact, when i cleaned out my filters, the nitrate dropped from 60 ppm to 30 ppm!

Interesting readings. You still have ammonia and nitrates and did have nitrites, but don't now. Sounds like maybe some sort of interruption in the cycle that kinda threw things back. Nevertheless, your ammonia and nitrite should read 0 and nitrates 25 or less. But, you see what a clean filter can do?!
