WOW! Those last ones look like a cross breed between Pearlscale and a Bubble Eye!!! NEAT! I LOVE Bubble Eyes but I am so scared of getting one because I am scared that their eyes will pop! I think one would make a neat tankmate for Hammy, though.

Now those are what a bubble-eye should look like, with the rounded body, strong peduncle & fanned out tail. All we got here in Perth are local ones with long, skinny body, bumps/kinks on the backbone & crimped tails.

Is this variety common in your area?

No. I don't ever recall seeing such beefy muscular bubble eyes!

They are usually really scrawny looking. These bubble eyes look like they could kick some serious butt!

they have tonnes at an my fav lfs although as d_golem said australia's are not great quality like that usually very long and slender but lately i have been noticing a change in the stock and they are becoming more muscely (sp?) may be coming from a different breeder, but i have been seeing some really good quality sized bubble eyes with perfect symmetry nice round plump bodies and most importantly healthy looking

yeah. we occasionally get these in australia, It is very rare to find ones of these quality here. I have two immature bubbleeyes (around 1 inch body length) in my son's tank at the mo', i'm hoping their body development will look similar to the ones in your pic, there's potential there, but they will never be show grade ones t6ho'

Have you seen the ones with four bubbles? I've seen an internet site advertising them, but I think i'd be a very long time before we saw them being imported to australia...

The 4-eyed bubbles have a pair under their eyes and a pair of smaller sacs under their chin, where the gillplate creases are. The chin-sacs aren't actually the same as the fluid-filled bladders under the eyes since they inflate and deflate with the fish's breathing.
Pretty unattractive trait IMO though...

Ooooh you've seen one??! how exciting! from the photos on the website it looks like they're always fully inflated like the eyesacs. pretty interesting! -but I guess it's beauty is in the eye of the beholder right? I've always had a penchant for eye-sac fish..

I've seen a picture with a detailed description of the chin-bubbles. Personally, I've never seen a four-bubble fish close-up but I have come across several goldfish before that had that isolated mutant trait (chin bubbles)... grotesque-looking fellows for the most part, what with a single bubble or a pair of them pumping like a heart on their chin. *shiver*

Bubble eyes in that quality? Not in this life time. I had better luck finding good bubble eyes in FL, but here in so GA, just forget that. And even if, nothing more than the ordinary red or red/white ones. A black one would be wonderful, or a nice calico though.
Actually, a breeder of those 4 bubbly bubble eyes wrote an article for the GFSA, can't remember when. But he included a few pictures, and the fish looked actually very lovely. Gotta get used to those two extra bubbles though. The tank needs to be gravelless for those fish, since they suck in the gravel sometimes, and it could end up in a lower bubble with the risk of puncturing.
