In the UK Melafix is quite expensive to buy. And from looking at the ingredients and doing a bit of research on the web, have found that you can make your own quite easily. Has anyone ever done this? What are peoples views?

yes I do . I buy the pure Melaleuca (tea tree oil) and add drops in a mix of tank water! Works great.

o right. Do you add 1 drop per gallon? or 2?
Im just fed up of buying the stuff, when I know it has tea tree in it, plus I have a bottle of pure tea tree laying around!
Could I make up a mixture in the old bottle?? will it keep?

I suppose it keeps much the same as the oil itself does- a long time. The only thing is the melaleuca itself is quite expensive in pure form. If you have it already that's great. I think the Bach remedies do a 100% tea tree oil if I remember in the UK. I have read 2 dosages. What dose did you find out? One I read is that Melafix is 1.00% melaleuca and the other is 97% distilled water (and 3% tea tree?). Anyway I have used one tiniest drop to each 5 gallons and just mix it in a cup and pour it in. The only worry is overdose for a sustained period because it is an oil and can clog gills and also apparantly do some liver damage with longterm use, presumably to do with difficulties eliminating absorbed oil.

I have found numerous ways to make it. Yes my worry was that if i added too much it would clog the gills due to it being an essential oil. The bottle says it is 1% tea tree, melaleuca. Im might be popping out in a bit, but i will have a look for some recipies when i get back to see which will work best.
