I decided to feed my fish some zuchini this morning, so I washed it (A small one) and cut is up into spears. I then boiled it for a few secs, let is cool, at then attached it to their tank. They both went right for it, so I walked out to do some morning chores.
When I came back in to check on them, the spears had fell into the tanks and were on the bottom, the fish were still happily munching away and I was so happy as this is the first time I have gotten Hammy to eat zuchini...HOWEVER>
There was zuchini floating ALL in my tank! It was everywhere! All stuck to the filters, everything! I waited until they were showing no more signs of wanting to eat anymore, then took the spears out and decided a massive water change was in order.
I changed about 75% of the water, trying desperately to suck all the zuchini out. Finally got finished, turned the filters back on and...
MORE zuchini came flying out of the filters!!! AARRGGHH! Thanks goodness it wasn't a whole lot and I managed to get most of it with the fish net, but Lordy, I have never spent that much time cleaning a tank! I think I may have boiled the zuchini too long and it got too soft or something? LOL!

Oh Nickie what a bother! I boil mine until soft, pit the seeds out and peel the skin off, then cut into bite size pieces. Only add as much as I want the fish to eat.

With my plecos and snails it's a different story, I boil it and pit it then throw it into the tank in chunks, it's all gone by morning. lol

Do the chunks float or sink Fishmerised? I'd like to give it a try myself.

Nickie what a major pain that must have been! When I've tried feeding mine nori (seaweed), or spinach, I've had a simmilar thing happen. Haven't been game to try it since.
Nickie
Yeah, I guess I should have tried cutting it up into smaller pieces or something. Gosh, it was so messy!
Fishmerised
If you boil the veges they will get waterlogged and sink.
Nickie
It wasn't the sinking part that got me, it was all the stuff floating off of it! I swear, even today, after doing another massive water change, I am still seeing an occasional piece of zuchini floating around! LOL!
Fishmerised
Yes, I know what you mean, my snails and corys do that. Best for goldies just to cut into bite sized pieces so any muck just goes down their throats. lol

i didn't liket the zuccine because i cut it up in a strip and let them munch ..i like cucumber alot more they don't break apart like zuccines... ^^ but love watching them eat !
