I have two beautiful fantail goldfish. They both seem to have nice long tails, which I love. I was at the LPS yesterday and they had some fantails there that were considerably larger than my two, but their tails were MUCH shorter than mine. In fact, they looked rather stubby in comparison. Do I have veiltails, or do my fantails just have nice pretty tails? What is the difference between these fish?

A veiltail has a tail that is not forked - it is basically the shape of a triangle. The back of the tail is straight up and down.....
A very long. "forked" tail can be called many things - Ribbontail, Swallowtail, LongTail, etc...... they are beautiful in their own right. I have had Ribbontails that I have won "Most Unusual" awards for at various shows - yet they are a very common presentation of tail in other parts of the world. Go figure.
I think they are gorgeous - but then I am a HUGE fan of finnage on a fish......

AH, I get it! Tahnks Daryl! yeah, i am a big fan of finnage, too! I love how Feather's dorsal fin sticks straight up, and his long, long, flowy tail. I swear it gets a little longer every day!
