We lost Pearl one of foot long fancies the other day, leaving Emperor all by himself. Until we can get him a new friend we'll be transferring Obsidian the only other largish fish (6 inches) into Emperors tank, Mum really wants to get a crown pearlscale to go with Emporer, but the problem is most are no longer then 1-1.5 inches. Basically their teeny, so had a few questions.

Will the smaller fish end up stunted? as Emperor's a big fish, and from what I've read the larger the goldie the more growth inhibiting hormones they release.

What about feeding? Emperor eats massive pellets, a new small fish would be eating mini hikari pellets, will that be hard to make sure they each get their own food?

Emperors lived with a small fish before, when Onyx was waiting for his own tank to be set up, and Pearl almost crushed the poor little guy, he ended up in a breeding trap just to stop Pearl hurting him, Emperor never showed any sign of aggression or trying to crush Onyx, I'm just a tad worried.

Who's kept big goldfish (12" etc) with teeny goldies (1"etc)? How did it work?

Thanks
Emma

I've had no luck in that department. Over-agressive playing lead to tragedy with one of my fish. Personally, I'd set up a separate tank for the small one until it's large enough to be transferred.

I'm in Australia.

Emporer's never shown any aggresiveness and he's doing fine with Obsidian who is a lot smaller then him, but a crown pearlie would again be smaller. Might see if I can convince Mum to go for a Calico nymph, you can by them at large sizes, 6 inches plus and she loves the calico colouring. She's always wanted one of the large 8 inch shubunkins that pet stores sell, I don't think she believes me when I tell her they won't fit in her tank for long LOL.
