Full Version: Quickest Way To Dissolve Salt In Tank Water?

Although aquarium salt is supposed to dissolve quickly in warmer water, I find it takes FOREVER. Lately, I've been putting it in the Emperors, in front of the floss filter cartridges, and it seems to dissolve very quickly there...getting distributed safely and evenly.

Are there any other tricks? I've tried slightly microwaving the tank water first, and I can let it sit for an hour, and it still doesn't dissolve.

well, i don't know about everyone else, but how i do mine, is i put the salt in my "fish cup" (the cup that i only use for my fishie needs) and then i just dip that in the tank water.....i stir like mad with a spoon, then pour out the water, careful not to spill any salt in the tank...then i add more water in the cup and repeat this process till the salt is gone. It actually takes me less time to do it this way than trying to dissolve it in a larger volume of water like a bucket...even a bucket full of hot water! I've tried basically everything, and I find that this method works best for me. Plus my computer is right next to my tank, so if i get tired of stiring, i just come on koko's and check things out while i'm taking a break wink.gif

Have you tried pickling salt? That's my favorite and it is really fine so it dissolves more easily.

I have a quart container from Chinese food (actually LOTS f them!). I put the salt in the cup and hold it under the inflow. The salt swirls around in the cup - dissolving. The salt-laden water flows out the top and the undissolved crystals swirl at the bottom. This will dissolve a large amount in a short time.

I also add the salt into the bottom of my bucket I use to refill the tank. EAch time I dump in a new round of water to pour into the tank, more salt dissolves. It is usually completely gone by the time I am done refilling.

I also use that quart container with a lid on and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE. It is good exercise.

I would be REALLY careful about getting that salt in such a concentration in your filter. I know you put it in front of the filter pad, but I would worry that you are still exposing your media to a much higher concentration of salt than you wish. This can potentially cause problems with your BB.....

Salt is great. Salt is cheap. Salt is a pain at times...... rolleyes.gif

Great idea you guys! Since we had run out already, I went to wally world last night and found kosher salt and stocked up. Since it's finer, shouldn't be so much of a hassle.

I didn't know salt would mess with the bio filtration. ohmy.gif All I had read is that it can raise PH.
