i was wondering if it was ok to add a rubbernose pleco to my 46 gallon tank. Theres 4 fancy goldfish in there all between 1-3 inches (including tail). Would that work ok, they dont bother the goldies do they? Is the tank big enough? Anything else I should know about? Thanks!

I'm glad you asked this, Shamu, as I was wondering the same thing! I have a 29 gal that I am setting up with two fish, the largest being about 2", and I was wanting a rubbernose, or something like that to add to my tank. However, I am not sure if I have enough room, or if they will get along???
However, if it came between adding a pleco OR another fish (IF I have the room), then I would definately want another fish, as I would love a pearlscale!

29 gallons will not be enough for another goldfish, but possibly a rubbernose pleco, but Im not sure, thats why I started this thread lol

So you don't think I should get another gf to go in my tank?

no, I dont think so, goldfish can grow to be 6-8 inches not even couting all their fins, ultimately a golffish should be given 30 gallons each, with any less they will not grow as big as they might in a bigger tank, 10 gallons per fish is fine, but absolutely no less. Im sure ur 2 fishies will be very happy to have the 29 gallon all to themsleves, a small pleco shoud be fine, but Im still waiting for someone to confirm that

As far as I know rubbernoses don't become carniverous with age but I think all plecos have quite a high waste output. Not sure how much space they need. You could try PMing Devs as I think she keep plecs.

i have 1 GF (2 inches) and 1 bristlenose (2.5 inches) in 10 gallons tank. I know it is small for both of them.
Recently, i noticed my GF lost a lot of scales and his fin frayed really bad. I am not sure if the plecos bullied him because the trace of the frayed fin is definitely not from the plecos.

Since they only get to be 5 in I thought 6 gal would be good, but I read an article more, and they recommend 20 gal for it. Maybe they mean total swimming space, not like 20 gal per fish? If that's the case then the extra 6 gal of space you have would be fine.......but I'm not experienced in Rubbernoses to be positive.

A rubbernose pleco would get along fine with your goldies but I'd be hesitant to add one because 6 gallons really isn't enough....plecos are almost as dirty as goldies. I personally wouldn't give a pleco less than 10 gallons to itself, but thats just my opinion.
