Just put the fish in the 10 gall with some of their tank water and an airstone. Drain the main tank of all its water and get someone to help carry the main tank upstairs holding filterplugs etc. Fill it up with treated water and get the plugs all put back in fast. That shouldn't take more than 20 mins tops and the media will still be fine after that time. Put the fish back in when youre done.

Whenever you move a tank, you need to remove ALL the things that are in it. That means the water, deco, gravel, etc. Take the filters off the back.

If you take out some "cleaner" water off the top of the tank, then drain the water out and then scoop out the gravel into a bucket, you can use the "cleaner" water to clean out your gravel. This is actually VERY good for it - with the "used" fish water, any beneficial bacteria that is in the gravel will remain, yet you have a chance to remove a tremendous amount of waste and nasties from your gravel! While your tank is broken down, now is also a good time to use a lot of elbow grease to remove any traces of algae you wish, clean out the wells of any HOB filters, clean out cannisters, and scub any plastic plants and deco nicely. You can rinse the media in cleaner fish water, but do not change it or wash it too aggressively.

Your media can be dropped into the 10 gallon volume of water for the duration of the move and cleaning. IT will be just fine in there, with the fish for several days. The fish should be fine as long as you watch the water parameters and treat as needed. I always add a slug of Zeolite if the fish are staying over 12 hours, or a dollop of Prime if they are staying a shorter time. With an airstone, your fish should be ok for 12-24 hours , easily.

Moving a tank is really not a long or hard process. When you do - as mentioned above - get help so that the tank does not twist or missshape. I can move a 60 gallon tank, lock, stock and barrel (and fish) in about an hour - with cleaning included. I am also a weeny old lady!

Once you have your tank reset, I suggest that you feed very sparingly or fast the fish for a few days to allow the cycle to settle. Test the water carefully and change out what you need to in order to keep things under control. You may not have any bump at all - or you may have a small one that only lasts a few days.
