I've been looking around for gravel for a new tank I'm setting up (72g, 2 to 4 goldfish depending). I'd prefer it to be white, but I'm not having all that much luck. I can pretty much only find one size and that's really a mixed assortment of a few mm to a centemeter size. I'd like to find something a bit bigger if possible, but I'm just not finding it. Can I get substrate elsewhere (Home Depot?) that would be goldfish friendly (ie not mess with the ph or leech dangerous substances into the water)? What am I missing? I'm just concerned about getting something that's going to be stuck in a fish's mouth.

I got my black river stones from a supermarket. they have loads on ebay too. when you get the rocks you can do a simple vinegar test on them. put some white vinegar on them, if they start to fizz and bubble then they are no good for your tank.

I buy river stone at Wmart in the craft or garden section. I've gotten larger stones but also bags of pebbles, about the size you described. One warning about white though..once algae starts to grow it will never be white again!!! (speaking from experience!!)

I bought a bag of river stones pretty cheap & literally picked thru the ones I liked. I put those in my tanks & used the left overs for the plants & stuff!

I didn't consider the algae thing... excellent point! Black it is. Thanks all for your help!
