Well, Keebo was kinda a rescue from a petstore, he wasnt in the greatest shape, but was doing fine once I brought him home. Now he's bottom sitting under his little plants, 2 days ago in the morning I found him laying on top of his plant, half out of water pretty dried up already, I thought he was dead but pushed him back into the water and then he was fine, he wasnt eating then, but finally accepted food again today. I moved his plant so he cant get on top of it anymore, Im still kinda worried about him though, any opinions?

what are his water params? how big a container is he in and how often do you change his water? Also what is the temp of the tank? sometimes if the water is not warm enough bettas will be sluggish. Sometimes an increase in temp will help. Also some bettas are jumpers. Does you container have a lid on it? Maybe when you found him half out the water it was a failed jump attempt and he fell back in. Also sometimes a lot of bottom sitting and sluggishness can be the first sign of illness in a betta. i would make sure his water is at least between 72-78 degrees . make sure his container of tank had a venilated lid. I would add some salt to his water and maybe some bettafix to see if that helps. Make sure to keep up his water changes.

the tank is 1/2 gallon with a lid. Im not sure about the temp, it should be around 73 degrees, I did get him a light to heat the water but it didnt come with a bulb so I have to wait until hagen sends me one cause we did buy some light bulbs but my mom lost them. Water params are usually ammonia and nitrite 0, I do a 100% waterchange every 3 days, but since he wasnt feeling good I did a 100% waterchange and another one the next day. Now whenever I put food in he just starts darting back and forth, i'll try the salt, and update later

it could be the temp then . that is o.k. for a betta but on the cooler side. do you have a goose neck lamp or a table lamp you can turn on and put him near till you get more bulbs? it might help keep his tank warmer till then. he may perk up with more heat and with the salt in the water.

Hmmmmmmmmm, my betta used to do that. He liked it! Im not quite sure why they do it though

the only other lamp I have is being used for my tetras and little fairy shrimp or whatever they are. The colder temperature wont actually harm him will it? Could he do without the light and just the salt for a little longer?
bettaqueen
yeah but he would improve quicker with them. Do you have a regular table lamp you could sit his container under and turn the tank on?
Shamu23
I could try to find him one after school, poor thing he looks so sad sitting under his little plant, eventhough he should be happy since I rescued him from a tiny little cup that he could barely turn around in
bettaqueen
how long have you had him. It may take sometime for him to come back around
Shamu23
a bit more than a week I think
bettaqueen
oh he may still be recovering from the poor conditions he was in at the lfs.
Shamu23
yeah maybe, i've added salt and he's just a tiny bit better
Shamu23
he's getting worse, he was laying on his side under the plant this morning I thought he was dead, I gently shook the tank still no movement, then I gently moved him with a net, after about 1 minute he finally got up, he scared me to death, should I try adding melafix?
bettaqueen
I would and I would try to get him the heater as soon as I can
Shamu23
i'll do that right after school!
