Hello Friends!
As some of you know, I am the mom of a fancy goldie and a moor. I have found a tank for sale on craigslist that is a 20 gal, it comes with a stand, filter, etc. Would that be big enough for my fish? I know I could not add anymore, but I desperately need a tank for my fish and I was wondering if this would do in a pinch? The lady is asking 100.00 for it and I do think that is a bit much? Would I be better off just buying a new 30 gal? It would cost more, but may be more beneficial in the long run...

I like the idea of buying 30 gal. The initial cost is high but like you said, you will get more benefit in the long run. I like to have 15 gal per fish since 10 g per fish is kind of minimum requirement.

I think that lady asks too much though. You can check other cities around you too. Many people sale very cheap. I used to spend two hours to drive from illinois to indina to get a tank.

good luck!

Hi Nickie,
IMO, 100.00 is a tad too much for a used 20 gal, even with a stand. For just a little more money, you could get a 30 gallon new and know for sure that you have enough room for your fish.

I lucked out and got a 30 gal. tall with stand, lights, and hood for $35 at a yard sale, but I was on a "manhunt" for 2 weeks before I caught it. You can watch your local paper, thrift stores, etc., and maybe get a better deal.

Good luck! gudluksn.gif

You can get a brand now 29 gallon for not much more then that. I think. Anyway I would look for one of those.

I scored at a yardsale and got my 20/29 gallon for $5. It was just the tank, hood with a busted light switch, and a broken sump.

Yep, I agree. I told the lady NO DEAL today. I have decided to just get a new 30 gal instead and just keep my two fish and not get anymore. Thanks everyone!!!

good choice!

Nickie, sweetie. You can get a brand new 29gallon from wally world for 95$ with all the fixins!

Really? I haven't seen those. I wonder if the filter that comes with the 29 gal would be enough or if I would need to get another filter to go with it? This is a question I was pondering anyway as I was planning on getting a "kit" style with a filter. What do you guys think?

Eh. You'd still need a bigger filter. For my 30g hospital tanks I use the penguin bio-wheel 350. That turns 350gph and I've found it to be a pretty good filter. Kits are cool coz you get all the other stuff you need too. The filter I suggest is around 40$ giver take.

Yeah, I kind of figured that I would need to get another filter to go with the one that comes in the kit, as I was sure that filter would not be sufficient. Oh well, I am off tomorrow to get my goodies, along with an API water test kit, and some kind of vacume to clean the tank...can anyone think of anything else I may need to get while I am at the store???
