Full Version: Advice On Reusing/sterilising Tank

A few weeks ago our much loved goldfish Mobydick died. We were away at the time so the body decomposed in the tank. I had left him in what appeared good health with his automatic feeder which has served him well many times before. However a month before I had bought him a companion from our local Pets at Home store, this was a spur of the moment decision which I have come to regret as this fish died after 2 weeks so I suspect that it may have been diseased and passed whatever it had onto "Mobes". I now feel ready to replace Mobes but I need advice about reusing his tank. I know about cycling it etc but I want to remove any traces of whatever killed Mobes. What should I use for cleaning/sterilising it? The assistant in Pets at Home said to just give it a clean with salt water, telling me that a decomposing fish would not have polluted the tank. Is this the case?

Thank you

If you're starting again from scratch I would be tempted to use Potassium Permanganate or a bleach solution to "nuke" the tank and equipment (for peace of minds sake more than anything else). It may be that what killed your fish was more water quality related though, however it would still be wise to give everything a good clean it out.

This is a useful thread - it should answer most of your questions

I have used Daryl's advice on the bleach method that worked well for me.
