We are moving and I am in need of some assistance on how to properly and safely move my aquarium. We have a 44 gallon with an Emperor 280 bio wheel filter and a couple of bubble wands in the tank. We have have 2 goldfish Sugar is about 9-10 inches and Elvis about 5. I do not have another tank to start so I have to perserve what existing water I can.

We are moving about 20 minutes away from where we are now. So there should not be a long down time for the tank.

Thank you in advance for the help!

you could try to bag up as much water as you can in fish bags maybe, and put the bags in bucket.

good luck with the move smile.gif

I would take the filter media & put it in a bucket of the tank water. Maybe put the gravel in another bucket with some tank water...you could probably combine them. Cover the tops with something maybe plastic wrap if nothing else. Empty most of the water. Then bag your fish OR transport them in a covered bucket as well. I would drop a air stone in there as soon as you get them to the new place. Break down the tank, sit it on a blanket or something to protect it.

Move everything when you know you will be ready to sit it up at the new place. Then go for it! Good luck!!

Yes def. take all the filter media, submerge it all & preferably put a battery powered airstone in the bucket. Most of your beneficial bacs are in there after all so that's the most important part to take. Also you could get those quart size ziplock bags to fill with tank ornaments and gravel etc from the tank along with a covering of tank water. A second bucket I'd put the fish in with half tank water and half new treated. Then dump the rest of the tank water and strap the tank in as Jeanna says to the car with a blanket or whatever. I would try to set up immediately you get to the new place, 20 mins away is not so bad if there're no big delays..if you are fast you should be able to set up without any cycle problems smile.gif

HomeDepot and Lowe's carries buckets which I particularly like for moving fish. They come with fitting lids, and you just drill a couple of holes in the lid, drop an airstone through the hole, and you are good to go. The ones at Lowe's are in the paint department, and of course the HomeDepot buckets used to be bright orange... biggrin.gif

Moving just a short distance shouldn't be too hard, and it is not important to bring your tank water with you. What you need mostly is the beneficial bacteria in the filters, as discribed by others here just fine. smile.gif
