Somewhere on this site, I would have sworn that there was a video (done by Koko herself!) showing injection of a goldfish.
I have an EXTREMELY slow computer so it is taking hours to search for something on the internet that shows such treatment. I have been searching for 3 hours and have yet to pull up anything (I am at 14kbps today)
I have an appointment at 4:30 today with my vet to inject my blue Ryukin, BlueMoon - desparately in need of help. She has impacted eggs and I have been fighting for her life for over 8 weeks. The drugs just came in today and we are going to inject her with Amikacin. The vet has NO experience - but is familiar with needles. I have NO experience, but am familiar with fish. I would feel far more comfortable if I had a bit more information, though.
Can anyone with a faster computer point me to a place where I can find a good description or- best yet - a video of a goldfish being injected????? Has anyone done this and would be willing to give me pointers???????
I WOULD BE TRULY APPRECIATIVE!!!! HELP SAVE BLUEMOON!!!!!

Not sure if this will be helpful or not, it's a 'simple' guide to injecting koi:

Hi Daryl
Are you sure it's by Koko? I've had a good search and I can't find anything.
I did find this post though
http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/...0video&st=0Scroll down to post #5 and there is a link given by Toothless, click on that and scroll down to section 4 - there is a brief description of injections and it does specifically mention injecting aminoglycosides (of which Amikacin is one, if my nursing memory serves my correctly) It's brief, but it may help. Best of luck with Bluemoon

Heres the direct link

You may have seen Daryl, but there is also some info with regards to injecting Amikacin on page 66 of Dr Johnson/Richard Hess's book. It suggest's injecting Intraperitoneally, but it seems it can be done intramuscularly too - whatever the vets comfortable with I guess.

Thank you thank you thank you..... I have as many pictures and descriptions as I can collect now.... I also talked to Koko. \
Yes = it was her video, but it was lost in the upgrade. She has walked me through it, too.
I am off to the vet's at 4:30 to get the first injection and will then bring the bottle and needles home and proceed with the rest....
I am rather punchy and euphoric right now - my daughter has been having a hard time of it, giving birth. After 32 hours and a LOT of work, I am now the proud grandmother of Matthew, ringing in at a gigantic 9 pounds 5 ounces!!!!! Now, as soon as I get BlueMoon taken care of, I shall FINALLY try to get some sleep.....

I have finally calmed down enough from the birth of my grandson to really concentrate here.
You have all given me GREAT links and descriptions. I have printed of a number of them for the vet to look at. I figure that the two of us should be able to do this..... I hope.....
I hope the Amikacin does the trick...... I am going to end up with a HUGE bottle of the stuff - enough to inject about 1000 goldfish! Ack. But it was the only way to get the drug....
An aminoglycoside is simply a class of antibiotic, correct? Is is both gram positive and negative or only negative? I have been able to control the problem with Furans, but as soon as treatment ends, the fish is back down again.... I am hoping this will knock it out once and for all....
I will let you know how it goes.
Thank you all again - I do not know what I would do without all of you on this site - you are a real support group!!!!

Yep, aminoglcosides are a class of antibiotics (same family as Gentamycin, Tobramycin, Kanamycin) they're hard-hitting and
can work against gram-positive and negative bacteria, although I believe their widest action (in humans anyway) is against gram-negative bacteria. Good luck - I hope it does the trick for Bluemoon, fins crossed

The vet was excited. He invited all his vet friends over and they took pictures. They are going to post them on his website. He did not charge me anything. In fact, he will do all the injections for me, I just bring the fish over and away we go!
I put her in a bucket and drove over (I walk there in the winter to cover for the vet when they get snowed in - it is only a mile as the crow flies through the forest - about 2 miles down the road - so it is REALLY close)
I do not know if it is my imagination, but she seems straighter in the water - instead of vertical, she is perhaps at about 80degrees - the right side up 80.....
Keep your fingers crossed.....
I really hope this works. BlueMoon is such an awesome fish - a real looker. She could have given any fish a run for the Championship at show this year had she been well.....

Crap, I wish I woud've seen this post earlier today. My husband injected Oscar, and we could've walked you through it quite easily. I know we had found a video online of an injection, and not sure if it's posted above as I haven't looked at any of those links yet.
We did ours intramuscularly, right below the dorsal fin - towards the tail of the fish. Since you only use a small needle, you don't have to inject that deeply. If I remember right, the video we found showed the needle pushed deeper than we injected - but we still had the same results. You have to inject slowly as you pull out, because you don't want it to bubble, so it only needs to be plunged as deep as it takes to withdraw.
But I know you know all this already, so I am really hoping your beautiful fish gets better because he is such a looker, and I'm sure a great friend.

Blue Moon is a totally stunning beauty and if he has to sit this one out I am sure he will be grand champion next time.
I'm glad the injection was successful.

Sounds like Blue Moon was quite the attraction! Doing her bit for the training of fishy vets of the future

I'm glad it all went well Daryl - more pictures of Blue Moon in the photo section, once she has fully recovered of course, would be great

What a beautiful fish!

I am now a fully converted fan of injected drugs - in particular the Amikacin!!!! BlueMoon is, in less than20 hours, only listing at about a 40 degree angle from normal - something that has been a long time coming! She is perky - eating and swimming - and is semi-stable in the water. I am truly impressed.
She gets two more injections - I hope the improvements keep coming!!!!
WOW.

Well, the bottle would normally run about $130. - enough to do 1000 fish! But the vet had some left on his shelf that was near to expiration - and he knew he would not be using it in the next 4 weeks, so he just gave it to me....
I did not take a video - I was too busy holding the fish! Perhaps on Wednesday....
