Hello im SwimmingGoldie and i have 2 goldfish one a white bubble-eye and one telescope-eyed goldfish there in a 5 gallon tank for now but were looking for a used 20-29 gallon tank and anyways my bubble eye goldfish acts really strange when i turn on the light of the aquarium she or he dosent move then when i tap lightley she/he still dosent move then in awhile he/she then will start moving around really crazily its summer and its about 76 degrees in the tank and this fish is really plumb ( has a pot belly ) and poops out long light colored bubbley stuff. I've tryed giving it peas as a thought of costepation but nothin works its the same color as before i usually feed them floating pellets and flakes. and i dont thinkits ready to spawn yet cause its only half a month old and its spring what should i do? Im looking for advice

This should really be in the disease section, but hopefully a moderator will move it.

You should have a look in the disease section and at the top of the page there are some questions. If you could please answer as many of those as possible, we would be able to help you better.

It does sound a bit like constipation. Before feeding the peas to cure that, it is often recommended to not feed the fish for 2 days to prepare the digestive system for the peas. Then, the peas should be fed for 2-3 days.

However, I think we should wait for more info before deciding on a cure.

ummmmmmmmm well theres a problem i dont have ph scale readings and ammonia readings is that ok or do i need some right now for the answers

Bubble eyed goldfish are particularly delicate - far more than the average fancy goldfish. Because of this, they really need PRISTINE water to survive and thrive.

It sounds like your fish is suffering from a combination of problems - most problems do not occur by themselves. First thing you should address, though, would be the water quality. 5 gallons is simply too small a volume of water to allow you to react to water problems. What happens in a 5 gallon tank can occur in less than 2 hours - from ok to toxic.

Poor water quality will stress a fish - allowing opportunistic parasites access to a fish. Parasites often bring bacterial infections with them - as they break the fish's skin and lower immunities.

The first thing I would suggest is getting an ammonia/nitrite test. Secondly, if you have any sort of plastic tub that you can use - fill and hang your filter from - that is larger than 5 gallons, I would immediately move the fish to that, until you can get a larger tank.

Changing out the water - at least 25% of it every day is most likely in order - fresh water will go a long way to helping a sickly fish.... Tests will help you to determine exactly WHAT you have to do - and how to go about it, for working without more information will just be guessing. It is nearly ALWAYS a good guess that less than quality water is at the root of most problems - so you cannot go too wrong with changing out the water.

thanks for all the help i really do because im sooooooooooooo attached to this one and ill do what you want me to just a bin? also i do have dechlonaite stuff that takes chlronie out of tap water but how long does it take to actually work because i replace the water with distilled water from the grocerie store? am i supposed to do that? and im soooo sorry im all confused i feel like to stupidest person on this website.

thanks alot SwimmingGoldie

Even if you don't have a test kit at the moment, you should still post the answers to the rest of the questions.

As for the water, distilled water is fine but it is cheaper to just use tap water and add the chlorine-remover. It works almost instantly, but you want to add it before you pour the water into the tank.

You should be doing 25% water changes every day to avoid problems in a small tank like that.

That's probably the problem. A bigger tank would end your troubles, but until then, you should be doing much more frequent water changes.

Like Daryl said above however, any large container would be fine. If you have any plastic bins or tubs that are larger than 5 gallons, rinse it out as well as possible and use that as their tank. The best way to help your fish right now is more water volume to help the water quality.

Does the filter have any writing on it? This could help us identify which model you have.

Edit: I forgot to say that you should get a test kit ASAP. Good luck!

Distilled water is, on the scale of treated water, the MOST treated - (filtered/RO/DI and then distilled). The distilling process removes ALL the minerals and inclusions from the water. ALL of them.

Fish need many nutrients to live - and many of these they need to get from their water. Distilled water has none of these.

The BIGGEST problem with distilled water is not what is stated above, though. It is the fact that distilled water, because it has no minerals in it, also lacks ANY buffer. Since there is NO buffer in the water, the pH of the water will not be stable. As you feed the fish, or they eliminate, the pH of the tank can bounce all over the scale. A non-stable pH can be stressful, lower immunities or even kill, all by itself depending on how much it is varying over how many hours.

Use tap water. Use a dechlorinator. Get a larger volume of water.

ok i have another question about water conditioner i have NovAua+ ( kordon) instead of the other one i listed, anyways do i have to wait a day for the conditioner to settle before it goes in the tank with fish or can i just put the right amount in right away with the fish in there too?

thanks for helping the stupid on (me) SwimmingGoldie
SwimmingGoldie
hello any one
SwimmingGoldie
is it just me or am i just not getting anyones reply im sorry but on every wensday i clean my bettas tank and im wondering if i can put the conditioner in it right away along with my other fish
MyGoldfishIsLumpy
You need to add the correct amount of water conditioner to the tap water before you pour it into the tank. It works almost instantly.

Keep looking for a bigger container for your fish!
SwimmingGoldie
thanks

could yuo help with one more thing?

ok so i have NovAqua + it says on the bottle add 1 teasspoon for each 10 gallons of tap water how much would i put in 1 1/4 gallon bowl for my betta? thanks alittle off topic but i hope you can help biggrin.gif
MyGoldfishIsLumpy
For small amounts like that, I usually just put a tiny bit in.

I probably add too much, but it's hard to overdose with that stuff so too much is better than too little.

Just do your best guess at a little less than 1/5 a teaspoon and it will work.

However, if anyone has any other techniques for measuring such tiny amounts, let's hear them! smile.gif
Ranchugirl
Well, how about closing one eye, eyeballing the tank with the other eye and just adding a little swoop of the stuff? biggrin.gif Gosh, 1 1/4 gallon! It has been such a long time since I dealt in such small bodies of water. I have to think in cup fulls of conditioner for my hubby's koi pond these days... rolleyes.gif
SwimmingGoldie

I'll be moving this out of the 911 section then, but please, feel free to re-post here again if any troubles show up again. smile.gif Glad to hear that your bubble eye is doing better.
