Trogdor is acting strange. He seems very fidgety, and I have noticed that his tail is all shredded. Really bad. It used to be long and flowy and beautiful, but in the last week it has split in several places almost up tot he base, and the ends are shredded. Normally he is very placid, except when I turn on the light or feed him. I recently added a new filter to his tank, a little whisper filter. He hated his filter in the past, but it produced a very strong current. The Whisper filter has a very low current. But could that still be agitating him? I have thought about turning it off, but to be honest I am not always good about changing his water on a regular basis ( In know, bad fish mommy!), and I thought the filter would help him out. Could it be that he just hates filters? Or could there be something else that I am not aware of. Bettas are a little more of a mystery to me.

THat could be what is bothering him. Some bettas react to the littlest change in their envoirment. You might try putting a plant in front of the flow to block it some. If you have the kind of whisper I have if you turn it all the way down it still flows.

Well, I turned off the filter, but his tail looks awful now. It is half gone, and what is left looks like someone stuck it through a paper shredder. I just changed out his water, so that is good. The filter had only the tiniest flow, but maybe it was enough to upset him.

the filter flow may be too strong for him and causing him stress and causing him to bite his tail. I would go filterless. you may have to change the water more that way . To get his tail to come back I would keep the water pristine, use bettafix for a couple weeks ( a betta size dose of melafix available at Petsmart and petco in the betta section) and add some aquarium salt to the water.

Some bettas grow tumors. Is it just one sided? My Suchin did the same thing . She grew a rather large tumor on one side and then bloated. She lived about a month after she grew the tumor. I hate to be a bearer of bad news but there may not be much you can do for him, but be extra good to him and just enjoy him while you have him. Some of these tumors will rupture on their own some will eventually end the bettas life depending on what is causing it by pressing on the internal organs an comprimising them. you could try a round of antibiotics just in case it is the first kind. Make sure he is isolated by himself and not in with other fish . good luck

I just got a Betta a few days ago. I sure hope cute little Trogdor gets better soon. If I may make a suggestion, why not try an under gravel filter? Thats what I use for my Betta, Barney, and he dosen't even notice it's there. Get well soon, Trogdor!
