I was wondering if it is ok to mix different breeds of goldfish with certain tropicals? I am new to fishkeeping and currently have a fairly healthy coldwater tank with some goldies and a male betta. Would it be safe for my fishies if I put a couple of them in with some warm water tropicals, and if so which ones?

Do you mean put your goldfish in your tropical tank? What sort of tropicals u got?

I won't say that goldfish and tropicals are incompatible, it's just not recommended as their living requirements are different.

Well, I have some goldfish in a tank now, but I am giong to be changing rooms, and I was wanting a bigger tank. Sooo I wanted to know if they would mind the heat (would they breed? that would b cool) or if they would mind tetras, guppies, hatchetfish, goramies, clown loach, etc. I have a black moor and a regulat double tail, but they are in with a male betta right now and are quite happy. My sis is goint to have guppy fry, so I will probably have some of those (she's within days, lol)....I am new to haveing fishies, so I really don't know what's right and wrong. Thanks tho!! biggrin.gif

IMO none of the fish you listed should go with goldfish. most (possibly all) can be very nippy at the goldfish.

Goldfish are happiest in cold water. Remember that goldfish will eat anything that'll fit in their mouths! Baby guppies would be like popcorn!! blink.gif

Some of the fish you listed really need warmer temps! I am pretty sure that Clown Loaches are a no-no!

Ditto to what Fuzzy and Jeana said.

Having said that, goldfish doesn't mind warmer temperature. But yeah those trops will nip and bite and harass the goldies.

Well, my sis had a couple of pearl scales in with some tropicals, and they did have some nips, although she had an anglefish, and it was probably the meanie. Hmmm, I will be careful to getmild tempered and small things while I am selecting, then. But that's why we plan ahead, right? biggrin.gif Thank you guys so much for helping a noob, and her babies!!! exactly.gif

I don't think anyone here has experienced mixing goldfish & tropical. If your sister has done that, you should ask her instead. biggrin.gif

I really wouldnt, it will be very stressfull for the fish, and could even cause death
Saiyori
mmmm, david, that was for a month XD. Shamu, thank you, I am hoping to keep them seperate but that may be out of my hands....(I need to make my parents listen!!!!!!!!!!!!)

i have actually. And it didint work.

Also, Saiyori, be careful with small things. goldfish may see them as a snack. i lost a few guppies when i kept them with the goldfish.

My Mum used to keep tropicals with goldfish, it was not a pretty sight. The tropicals were serpae tetras, some unidentified grey tetras (probably phantoms) and clown loaches. One of the goldies lost her entire tail to the clown loaches.. and the tetras had a bite whenever they could.

Okay, wow after seeing this and the overcrowding I have with my goldies (i have 5 babies) I feel like a terrible fishkeeper... cry3.gif I just hope my parents listen and either give the fish up for their own good or get a 120 gal tank for the 5 of them. *sigh* we'll see what happens.
Shamu23
ur not a terrible fishkeeper smile.gif u just didnt know any better, now that u know though u can take better care of ur fishies, goodluck with ur parents

weel goldfish and platies/guppies can live together under certain conditions, but not pearlscales because the tropicals will pick their scales off. clown loaches are uncompatiable for shure.
the best fish to put with goldfish is in my oppinion dojo loaches.
Saiyori
Thanks Shamu, pixifish and I are seeing what we can do.....I am gonna try to covince the parentalunits to put the goldies in a rubbermaid tub with a filter and see how the do with all the space, lol blink.gif .

I think I have fianally given up on combining tropicals and goldies, they sem t be happier seperately, although the goldies seem to like there male betta friend biggrin.gif
Shamu23
good for u biggrin.gif trust me, this will be much less stressful for the fish being with their own kind

I had my common goldie in with trops for awhile. He's on the right with some tetras, swordtail and platies. They were mostly compatible--the gf did have some nips out of his tail and the sword would chase and peck at him sometimes. The worst thing though was when he got a severe bacterial infection and had red streaks all over his body and fins. The other fish never showed any symptoms but I fed them all medicated food and the gf made a full recovery. He is now in a larger tank with another gf for company and they are both doing great so far.

So, can they go together--yes, depending on the fish. Should they go together--probably not. Sounds like you already made the right decision! smile.gif
