Bought the 4 gallon version of this:

IPB Image

He's in a small bowl right now at work, and just got the okay from my boss to get him a bigger tank. This should be great, right?
mrbumblebee
Very stylish! Is the 4 gallon version the "baby biorb"? (if not, it looks very similar to the biorb range) I think the filtration system with biorb's is quite good, not sure whether it would be too strong for a betta, but you can probably adjust the flow. Does it come with a light and heater? I know the larger biorbs do? Although, you could probably get away without either for a bett, depending on the ambient temperature in your home etc. smile.gif
mrbumblebee
Is this it?

I ses it comes with a nice light too smile.gif
Lolafish
Yes, it's the biorb, and it comes with the light and filtration system. The only thing I am worried about is water changes, but I'll figure it out. Right now I have to change the water twice a week in Spooky's bowl, so should be able to cut back to once per week now. I've heard that the filters are expensive, but I'm thinking they can just be rinsed instead of replaced like we do with our goldfish filters, until the floss is spent.

I got it online at Petsmart with a coupon, so didn't have to pay full price. I can't wait to see how Spooky likes the extra room! heartpump.gif
mrbumblebee
Sounds like a greeat deal! Pictures please when it's all set up! rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

I think you're right - the filter media for those can probably just be re-used. A single betta won't produce a huge bio-load or much solid mechanical waste.

Until the filter media cycles you just carry on with regular water changes as usual. Maybe you could use some filter media from another tank to "seed" the new one or maybe put some of the new filter media in oith one of your other tank filters for a week or so to seed it? smile.gif
Kristi
Hey, that's cute. Bet your betta will love it--pix would be great if possible! biggrin.gif

Great idea! I think I'll do just that.

Ooh, stylish! I may have to look into getting something like that myself. Trogdor is in a little 1 gallon, and although he doesn't seem to mind, I would really love to put him in something a little bigger.

I think a biorb with a betta would be fun! It might be the next fish I'll get once I have a goldfish in a tank and this is a great idea! smile.gif Neat little tank/bowl! tongue.gif
Sushi67
Ah! I always look at the biorbs at the store thinking they are to small to house anything, HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT BETTA FISH?! He is going to love this. Biorbs would make great betta homes as long as the betta can reach fresh air.

smile.gif Those are great Betta homes, I have the 9 gal biorb for my betta Steven. He loves it.

Cool! How do your water changes go?
bettaqueen
I think he will absolutely love it !. I have always looked at those when I am in petsmart and oggled them , they were just too expensive for me. maybe one day. YOu have a pretty cool boss to let you keep him at work
Lolafish
Well, it arrived today. Can't wait to go to work in the morning and get it set up and running. It's really cool looking. smile.gif The only thing I was disappointed in, is that the 5W bulb it comes with does not plug in anywhere separately. I wanted to put it on a timer, but I'll have to buy an extra transformer for $20 before I can do that. The transformer that it comes with, is set up to have the filter and light plug into the same receptacle. It has an on/off switch for the light, but obviously cannot be put on a timer or the filter would turn off too. That kind of blows.

It's very spacious though for 4 gallons, and I think Spooky is going to love it.
Trinket
Congrats Lola smile.gif . Its going to look really nice and your betta will love it.

looking forward to pics when you've set up. Good luck.
Lolafish
Hmmm. I'm having issues with the board tonight. Not sure why.

I set it up and bought some new fake plants, but they won't stay put on the bottom because the ceramic media that comes with the tank are fairly light and don't hold anything down. What I've decided to do is to weight them down by making my own silicon balls encasing the plant's roots to keep them from floating away. Biorb sells plants already weighted, but they are 5 times more expensive than regular plants.

I'll take pics as soon as I get this done, which should be late next week.
Lolafish
This is so hilarious. I am still making my own weights for the plants I bought, and probably spending as much as I would have if I just bought the plants made for this tank. I'm on my second tube of silicone, and 3rd day of "glueing". Tomorrow I finish up the final touches, and then will give it a good 48 hours for a final cure. So Monday will be the first day Spooky gets his plants back. Why didn't I just buy the darned things already made? Well, at least they'll be custom. hah.gif
bettaqueen
even though you are spending more you are probably better making your own. I have bought the weights for the plants before and they always fall off
Lolafish
(drum roll........)

And here he is close up, posing for his mama:

I had to give up on the plants I was working on. I had them finished, and in the bowl, and then when I did a real good cleaning today, I found lots of bits of silicone at the bottom. It was pretty gross, so I took them out. I drove around town for 2 hours today trying to find the Biorb-made plants, and nobody had them. So now I have to order them online. Phooey.
Goldyfan
Very nice Lola!! Your boy sure is pretty...and happy in his new home, no doubt! It looks very sleek without plants in it. Have you tried siliconing river rocks to the plant bases to weigh them down? It works really well, and they would blend in with your existing rocks.

smile.gif Great job!

Hmmmmmm....and now you got me thinking again! Thanks for the help!!!
bettaqueen
yup or you can hot glue gun ( yes the hot glue is safe) a suction cup to the bottom of the tank too and attach the plant to the suction cup or hot glue the plant to the suction cup. Or just hot glue the plant to the suction cup so you can move it for cleaning. I have down both with my tanks and either works well
Lolafish
I'm bringing my camera back to work in the morning, as I got lucky and found the plants I was looking for. I even found a cool little red Buddha that looks awesome! I am very pleased now with how everything looks, and the best part is, Spooky is psyched! He can't stop swimming in and out of the leaves and stalks, exploring every crevace and hole just like a human diver. My DH thinks I am way too attached to this fish...it is hilarious. biggrin.gif
bettaqueen
I am so happy for spooky. what is a DH?
mrbumblebee

what is a DH?

I thought maybe it's "dear husband or hubby"?! biggrin.gif
bettaqueen
I was thinking that too. Like Darling husband or dear husband
BeancurdTurtle
Maybe "Division Hanager" since she's at the office.

That's a cool setup Lolafish.
Lolafish
DH is "dear hubby" yeah.gif

And the last one I promise, it's finally done!!!! I really love it:

P.S. - Ignore that Ammonia register. It was a waste of money, and I threw it away already. The ammonia stays at zero, but the monitor kept showing traces. Guess it's about as useful as the water param strips. rofl3.gif

mrbumblebee
Looks great! Good job! thumbs.gif Very smart set-up, lucky Spooky! biggrin.gif
Trinket
Spooky is so handsome- the red buddha shows his blue off well- his home is looking great now biggrin.gif
love-rabbit-fish
very stylist. the way you set up the plants are very cool, i thought they were real plants in the first pic! silly me blink.gif

Spooky looks so happy in there!
Lolafish
He's a ham in front of the camera. He'll come right up to me and just sit and pose. He's such a goof. hah.gif
bettaqueen
Spooky's tank looks really nice with the plants. He looks like a handsome happy little dude there. It is like he is saying " thanks Mom for the new digs"
bluiis
Looks great, I'm sure he loves it!
CiscoKidd
He looks great in it!
its such a pretty tank!
branjie
I love it! Looks great, an he must be loving it to. It must be nice to keep each other company while you're at work smile.gif.

Oh, BTW I'm thinking of getting a Biorb to put a Betta in. Is the filter flow adjustable? I know Bettas aren't keen on a lot of filter flow.
Leah
It looks really good congratulations
