Full Version: Will The Tail Tell The Tale?

Yeah its me
I cant seem to keep my nose off of the fry tank and I have noticed that some of the fry have deeper "V"'s in the tail fin than others so is it possible that I have some fry that are comets and some that are goldies? Can you even tell the difference at this age? Approx almost a month old.

Yes you should be able to tell tell the tail type by now. The V will be a single tail and the flowery tripod the double. Are the parents double or single tail? Another few weeks and you will see color too smile.gif !
Yeah its me
Hi Trinket, all of the fish are singletail but I have some very pretty colors! I was glad to read that soon I would see some colors, I have been so sure that it was the little commons that were breeding, but what do I know... This is my first year with the pond and the pond fish... ok, now you have me all excited!!! krazy.gif

Ok, have to add this tho, the comets ( who were sold to me as shubbies) have long tail fins but they have a very indented "V" the smaller fish have a V but it is less visible. I do have one goldie that is about 7 inches that has no V, it is a full tail fin, and he is the one with the breeding stars.

Well its hard to tell which are the parents often, especially in pond life biggrin.gif But its really fun to watch the tails and colors come out and make a guess. You will probably find you have a couple that are exact replicas/doubles of the parents and then others that look nothing like. I think Anette had a couple of double tails from single tail parent fish and i have had acouple of single tails from double tail fish so they do vary. Can't wait to see your fry pics!
Yeah its me
I keep trying to take some decent pictures but they are at the stage where they move so fast! I finally had to go and get a black background so i could see them as they are the same color as my kitchen walls blink.gif .
I have one fry that I swear that if I just watch him long enough I can actually see him growing, he is over an inch long now, but wouldnt you know it, he is one of the shyest. I dont want to name anyone yet because they are still not thru the danger period.
