Hi! Me again... in a place for goldfish with a tank of guppies. wink.gif

Anyways, another guppy of mine died. However I think some part of me knew he wasn't longed for this world because he never really ate, not for the whole time I had him. He was a beautiful guppy and will be missed.

So now I just have Firenze (my new male guppy) and Calypso (my female), they seem happy enough. Firenze hasn't been eating much though but that may be on account of my nitrite levels are up. Which is sort of good because it means the cycle is at least half way done... and I've been using Cycle to help speed up the process a bit.

When I first saw the nitrite levels go up I did a 50% water change and added a lot of Prime and some more Cycle... but the levels were still at about .5 and essentially unchanged from my first test, now they're at like 1.5-2.0 sad.gif and this is about 20 hours later. But like I said, they both seem fine aside from Firenze's lack of appetite. And Prime at least claims to detoxify nitrite.

So how much should I be concerned by my inability to lower my nitrite readings?
And what else should I do to get my guppies over this last major hurdle of cycling (although, there are really only two MAJOR hurdles... rolleyes.gif )
Calypso remains a little pirhana as always though.

Your concern should be real,as Nitrites will kill a fish in no time, especially if that fish is vulnerable or with low immune to begin with.
How big is the tank-What size type of filter are you using?

Sorry that I put it in the wrong section. sad.gif

I have a 40 gallon tank with a filter that I can't honestly name. However it claims it's good for up to 50 gallons. I was told that wasn't strong enough for my goldfish, but these are guppies which produce less waste. So it should be okay.

I do daily to every other day partial water changes with a bunch of Prime each time. The water is at a steady 80 degrees farenheit.
im-trying
Hi just a few other things to ask.

How many fish do you have in your tank? Have you changed the filter media since you moved the goldfish? And thirdly and it might seem stupid but, when you do your water changes do you use your hot water tap to heat the water up, I used to do this and destroyed a filter through it becase there was a high copper trace in my hot water tank and the copper killed off my bacteria colony, kind of like using a copper based medication but worse because i kept changing the water and things kept getting worse.

Also you said some of your fish died, how long were they in the water for before you found them, and also are all the other fish visable at feeding time, as dead fish can foul water very fast. A zebra danio of mine was attacked by somthing in my tank while i was at college through the day and when i came home i found the corpse and the nitrites were at 2.0!! So i did 2 very fast water changes which got it down to .25 then by the morning it had cycled out but i had the water ready for the change if it needed it.

Hope its helped smile.gif
