Full Version: Will My Baby Common Eat Some Of These Things?

i heard of oranges, i have some fresh seedless ones.
also, i used to go fishing alot, and i noticed that bits of hotdog and little peices of rolled up bread work, i already fed him a little bread ball and he likes it more then his floating pellets.
i also have apples.

if any of these work, what would be the best way to feed these to him.
because he really doesnt like eating his floating pellets that much

The problem with bread it that it expands when wet so it could hurt his little tummy. I also don't think its all the nutritious for goldies. They will eat oranges and they are good for them just don't feed them too often because it could fowl the water.

If he won't eat pellets you should buy some goldie flakes. Also, always soak you food before feeding it.

Good luck. Hope he starts eating.

ok thanks.
i really dont like to feed him flakes because he doesnt seem to like those much either. he will be hungry but will only eat whatever floats by him and then swim around ignoring the rest of the flakes.
im just looking for a better diet for him, something more natural.
thanks for the help, and i just realised that there is a food part of the forum >_<.
im going to give him a small peice of orange and then a small peice of apple, and see what he likes more. im putting my money on the apple smile.gif

My commons really seem to enjoy it when I make them gel food. There is a great thread pinned in the food section with numerous reciepes, I kind of used the base line ingredients and played around from there. I did notice that you are 15 so make sure it is okay with your parents before making this as it tends to smell a little and requires somewhat gross ingredients. I personally have a blender jar that is specifically used for just the goldies food and nothing else.
You can blend pellets into the gell and that way you are able to better ensure that you pet is getting a more complete diet than feeding one or two veggies or items alone.

All of my commons loved zucchini and spinach. You may have to blanch them a bit if he is little so he can tear bites off.

thanks for telling me what your commons eat, guys! i hope he likes some of that stuff, because my 10 gallon just broke and he has to live in a 1 gallon, so im going to be giving him some tasty treats.

also, is it weird that he only eats his floating pellets when noones around or when his light is off? because ill watch him, he will eat flakes if they go by him, but when i fall asleep his light is always off, and when i wake up i notice a pellet or two are always gone. hes a sneeky little fella.

A healthy goldfish will not starve.....keep offering the specified foods. He will eat. Just be sure not to OVERFEED as it can foul your water. Also a good gravel vac each week will keep him healthy!

Actually I think feeding is not your problem........since your tank got broken & he's living in a one gallon tank THAT is a REAL problem. While you are tank shopping I would look for at least a 20 gallon tank. The biggest tank you can afford is good advice! exactly.gif

thanks for the support about a 20 gallon, but we cant afford it now, my mom barely makes enough for us to scrape by and my dad just got back to work after being layed off for a few months.
but we did get him another 10 gallon, for only 7 dollars! and this time its just him so he will be fine for a few weeks.
im actually thinking of taking the next step up, instead of a 20 gallon and getting a 30 gallon when he gets bigger. im sure that would give him plenty of space unless he lives a long time.
also i dont have a gravel vac, but now i have river stones, theyre pretty big, to the point where i dont need to stack them, i just have 1 layer of them on the bottom, and boy do they look million times better then gravel!
but what im thinking of doing is, every 2 weeks or so taking the rocks out and rinsing them in very hot water, then let them cool and put them back in.

never ever take the rocks out of you tank for cleaning that will kill your cycle. what you need to do is get a siphon or a python and run it around the bottom of the tank and this will collect the poop that is trapped under the rocks i have river stones and i do the exact same thing. also they make water changes a breeze.

oh and never run anything under hot water.

is there any other way to clean gravel besides using a gravel vacuum? i really cant afford one right now, ill save up for it, but in the mean time how would i do this?
before, when i had gravel, i would stir the gravel up with my net, it would put all the left over food or poop in the air and then my filter would suck it all up.

if you cut a short piece of hose and put one end in a bucket and then the other end in the tank adn sti the rocks and what not up it will suck up poop and un eaten food. if you choose a siphon they cost around $10 nothing special it is just really a piece of hose with a barrel type thing on the end

I found that my fish LOVE peas. Just make sure they are thawed and peel the skins. He may choke otherwise!
