I just ordered a 2-3 inch ranchu from Blue Iris Watergardens (they don't sell ranchus anywhere in my area that are nice) and was wondering which food I should feed it that will produce a nice headgrowth?? On Hikari's website it shows they both have the same protein content (46%) and ingredients and that they both can be fed to ranchu's. Any personal experiences with either would be helpful.

They are almost the same food besides one being floating and one sinking, except that the lionhead contains spirulina.

I have never used oranda gold, as i prefer sinking food. I highly reccomend it, i have got very good results with it, but i vary my goldfish's diet so much that i'm sure it is partly the large variety that has kept my fish happy.

Since they are so close to being the same it's highly likely that you would get similar results with them smile.gif

Luke, I had the same experience with Hikari Lionhead enhancer. Never tried the other one, since I prefer sinking food as well.
Pearlscale, if you wonna try other foods that help with wen development, try frozen bloodworms. The only disadvantage of it is, that they might carry certain bacteria with them, especially when they get thawed accidentally before they end up in the freezer of your store. I usually buy the hikari bloodworms, they are supposedly sterilized, and don't carry bacteria with them. It might or might not be 100% certain, but I never had any ill effects from feeding them, and I feed my fish quite a lot, also my bettas..... smile.gif

I, too, give Hikari bloodworm to my fishes as treat. I am not sure if it contributes to the wen because my lionhead is only half a year old, he has no wen yet. But they really like it.

Ranchugirl, do you soak the worms or just float them in the tank ?

BTW, those worms stink !
Ranchugirl
Yeah, its not the prettiest smell in the world! yikes.gif I just let them thaw on a plate, rinse them by putting them in a brine shrimp net and hold them under water, and feed them....My hubby calls them Fish-Spaghetti!

Thanks everyone for the advice!
I think I am going to try the Hikari Lionhead, because I to like sinking pellets. I am also going to try feeding bloodworms (hopefully the smell doesn't disgust me to much). I already feed frozen brine shrimp, peas, Pro-Gold, and sometimes bananas. So hopefully with the variety it will have a beautiful wen. If it doesn't at least I can say I tried...I still love 'em though. My new little ranchu should be here any day now. I am getting so excited!

I haven't had any swim bladder problems with tetrafin goldmedal, plus, the fish like it too.
