Its hair algae and you can use chemicals or just scrape it off and let the filter do the work. Right now I have come across an algae bloom as it is a new pond for me and the water is a musty green now and you can not see the fish more than a foot and a half down. Doses of bacteria and chemicals are the only way to wipe it out but some can hurt plants and I personally dont even like using them.

We have a bunch of snails that help keep our algae in check.

Here's a really good page with information about getting rid of different kinds of algae: Robyn's Pond Algae Index

Yeah, this stuff's awful. It chokes everything. Most people recommend manual removal with a stick and twisting motion. You can actually buy mechanized twisters especially designed for this purpose at some pond outlets. You have to be careful though, as the algae clings to everything, you can end up uprooting half your plants at the same time. I've never used any of the treatments for this algae so can't advise.

Lovely looking pond, by the way. I think I remember looking at the photo diary when you were buiding it.

Last summer I started to have this problem & used Algae Fix by pond care. It worked great.

I have had a big algae boom in my pond this last 2 months because of the weather getting hot so fast, and was out of Algae fix. So I bought Microbe lift PL after doing some research here. Big mistake!

I could not belive what happened, the Algae took over like this stuff made it grow and fed it.

I switched back to Algae fix and in less than a week it's getting better.

Everyday I use my pool net to grab out what I can't reach. I even go into the pond to twist and pull out hard to reach spots. Good luck, I do believe you have to treat it ASAP or it takes over.
