Does anyone know where I can buy one of these (well, 2 actually)

withOUT the lights? The clear part is glass and it is hinged in the middle. I have these really old All-Glass hoods with the hinged glass, but they are very corroded, the punch out things were done before I got them and do not work with my hob filters and I broke part of one of them today. The lights work great and are detachable, so I don't really want to spend $30 a piece to buy a whole new hood with the light.

I emailed All-Glass' customer service department to see if they knew too, but you guys are the real experts. I really don't want the tops that are totally made of glass, I like the black plastic with the glass area for the light strip. This is for a 55 gallon All-Glass tank with a center brace.

i suppose i could also ask around at pet shops and see if they have any where they gave the lights away or something too, but just curious if anyone has been able to buy just this part.

Thanks!

Yeah, my problem is the ones with the lights are like $20-30 a piece and i have to have two since I have a 55 gallon. I was hoping I could get the bottom part only for cheaper. :-)

Well, I do not know about "cheaper", but you can get the all glass (not the brand, but the material they are made with) tops that are hinged in the middle - no black plastic parts included.

I hate those black plastic hoods anyway. They are so tough to manipulate, cut, fit and clean. I want glass all around - it is cleaner, smaller, lighter and very easy to manage. It also can make the light sit a lot lower. I have gone to T5 lamps on a glass top with a height of only 1.5 inches off the top of the tank. This allows me to jam more tanks in a smaller space....

I digress, though. Sorry.

These glass tops are sold separately in most fish stores - I have seen them in PetSmart, too. We have an aquarium store that has outrageously priced fish and supplies, but wonderful prices on tanks and such. I have purchased multiple glass tops like that at that store.....

I cannot remember the brand of the glass top ..... uh......

They come in a flat box that is usually stacked under or near the display of replacement light bulbs for tanks. You are not looking for a "hood" but a "top".

You want to measure the length that you want. IF you have a very wide space, you can get ones for "double bulbs" but I like the single widths - so I can stick more HOB filters in the back (and UVs and other stuff)

Ok, I went and looked. Some have Marineland labels on their handles and others have AllGlass labels on the lift handles.... so I guess at least those two brands are available.

The plastic hinges (piano hinges $1.75 a foot) are available to replace the hinges should they ever wear out. I had one I had from about 1975 - and Ihad to replace the hinge....

Thanks Daryl! I guess that having ones that were completely glass would probably be better anyway, will look cleaner most of the time and allow for more light. I have a glass top like that on the 10 gallon fry tank. My tank is pretty standard so it should not be a problem finding the right sizes either, I just have to make sure the top is relatively cat proof. We may move the tank anyway and then the cat won't have access.

The piece I broke is the part that holds the black plastic flip up part to the glass part . I may be able to superglue it until I can afford a new top, but we will see. Superglue may be enough to hold it since it does not have to bear weight or anything. I wouldn't even be that worried about it if not for my mischievious cat and the fact that these fish are breeding machines and tend to jump around in the process. :-)

Thanks again, especially for looking at the store for me!
