I only have two suggestions 1. make sure the bubbles aren't going in to the intake tube of your filter, that makes a lot of noise, and 2. fold up a hand towel and put the air pump on top of it, it helps to insulate the pump and stops the vibrations and makes it quieter
If you want to buy a new quiet one I have a Rena and it is nearly silent

Have you got it sat on a surface? I find hanging them helps soooo much with noise. I have mine hung from a shelf using the plastic covered wire stuff from a washing line, it's nice and strong to make sure it doesn't fall and break or syphon water out the tank!

so do i, but the noise is still there.
i checked and the on i am using is a 'trackball'
i dissected the old one and it turns out that a metal strip in it is supposed to thump against the container to pump air.

Oh sorry I forgot all about this post, the Rena air pumps are available in a lot of stores, I ordered mine from drsfosterandsmith.com for a very reasonable price, I have my tank in the living room and I don't hear mine at all

I had the same problem with the pump that came with my tank, it sounded like an outboard motor
I went to nnnnnn last week and bought a tetra wisper pump....it's SO quiet!!! It was worth the fifteen bucks.

Isn't it funny how they all say 'silent' on the packaging too The first pump I ever had was crazy loud and got louder and louder every time you adjusted it. It would sit on atowel and be quiet for a few minutes and then start to rev up. I too found the only silent ones are the more expensive and heavier ones.

What exactly is your air pump sitting on? Carpet or hardwood floor? Mine sit directly on the carpet, and they are virtually sound-proof. I also use Whisper pumps, by the way.

its sitting on a towel thats totaly sucking up the vibrations coming from it. the towel is sitting on a marble floor.
does anyone have any experience with champion airpumps? i'm thinking of getting one instead of my current airpump if i stay sane long enough
