So finally I was able to find PP...Since I've looked EVERYWHERE for about a month I'm very happy to have found it.

I'd recently obtained 4 used 48 gallon tanks and I'd like to super nuke them and make sure everything is eradicated before I even think about using them. When I asked one employee suggested 4 tablespoons per tank which sounds like a ridiculous amount to me anyways. The other suggested a quarter of a thumbnail per tank. And suggested one teaspoon for my 90 and 150. What do you guys think?

I'd also like to nuke my siphons, pythons, nets etc. should I just add enough until the water becomes a dark purple?

Thanks!

Kathleen

Yes - just enough that it is ..... uh......eggplant purple? I would say "Godzilla Pink", except I think I would be dating myself. blink.gif rofl3.gif You want the intense pink that those old movies always depicted for Godzilla!!!

This takes remarkably little PP. I use about 1/16 teaspoon for 10 gallons - and that is really too strong.... Add just a bit and then let it dissolve. You can always add more - but you cannot take it out!

Remember, when you are done, if you wish, you can either remove all the color or greatly reduce the color (staining ability) of the pp by dumping in Hydrogen Peroxide. Since I often find that I have to carry buckets of brown or purple water over the carpet and across the nice tile floor to dump in my utility tub, I like to reduce the staining ability of the mix before! The less chance I take with tripping over a cat and dumping a bucket of purple water all over my carpet the better!!!!

FOUR tanks!!! druel.gif:..... Wow. That is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

im guessing this stuff makes everything in a new tank squeeky clean. no bugs no germs no NOTHING right? does it work better and less damaging than bleach?
mrbumblebee
Yeah, a little definately goes a long way! exactly.gif It's great stuff though and I personally gain more confidence that everything is super clean then just bleach alone.

Four tanks, huh?! - get nuking girl!!! happydance.gif

Well I guess I'm carbon dating myself then too Daryl..As I sat here thinking hmmm exactly what color does she mean..And then I saw Godzilla Pink! My minds eye called up the color immediately! biggrin.gif And gotcha on the peroxide I have a few bottles for this very thing already. The 48's were supposed to be for my boyfriend who was thinking he'd get into the hobby as well..But I kinda stole them. smile.gif Hoping for some fry! smile.gif

How long about do you soak your equiptment for? I thought maybe a half hour and then out back into the sun? You wouldn't believe the looks I get when I hang my python out back on our laundry line. smile.gif

Thanks Daryl I was hoping you'd see this!

One of the main advantages of PP over bleach is that you need much less of it to get a nuking solution. Say, for bleach you need 1 in 20 or better still 1 in 10 - thats's a lot of bleach for a large tank, especially if you want to leave it soaking (better). PP has a better killing power as far as I know - almost anything organic, however I think it's got a lot to do with contact time - especially as far as Bleach is concerned anyway. On occasion I have PP'd, rinsed and then bleached a used tank just to be super sure as I knew it had been "diseased" before. One or the other will usually surfice though smile.gif

I'll never forget the look on my Mum's face when she came back from holiday to find a 48 gal tank full of purple liquid sat in her lounge! rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif Oh, happy days! I love nuking tanks and equipment - go zapp 'em! yeah.gif

I, too, loooove the feeling of a nicely nuked tank!!!! rofl3.gif

I usually set up the tank with the pp, fill the tank up all the way and set the filter running. Drop the net and Python, etc, into it. I would let the tank/filter run for 4 hours with the PP. Take out your Python after 5-10 minutes. It will discolor the plastic a bit - make it brown! PP will not discolor your silicon in the tank corners, though - unless it is scarred and full of algae (this will turn brown).

Rub the tank down after and rinse well. Then set it in the sun for the sun to bleach anything that was killed but not removed. You can run bleach up the seams if you have encased dead algae in the silicon, etc, but for disinfecting, that will be overkill.

Bleach is very useful, but must be deactivated or completely rinsed. PP is not harmful to the fish in reasonable amounts - so if there is some left it makes no difference. (there is no reason why you would leave it - but you can feel comfortable that if, for some reason you miss a bit no harm will come to the fish).

As cheap as bleach is, pp is much cheaper for it takes soooooooooo little. I have a bottle from Merck Labs - it is over 40 years old and still going strong!!!!

I agree - have fun!!! In fact - post up a picture! I truly do get pleasure from seeing a tank get squeaky clean!!!! wink.gif yeah.gif

So sorry for your boyfriend - rofl3.gif - tough luck - teehee.gif: His loss is your gain!!!! yeah.gif wink.gif

I Heart PP...I do! I do! I do! So if I poured some PP on my really nasty neighbor (the entire neighborhood is praying he gets posted out soon) do you think he'd dissapear? rofl3.gif
toothless
Hahahaha!! rofl3.gif

If he were to be standing in front of a brown colored wall, then yes, he WOULD disappear. PP in high concentration can and will stain skin a dark brown coloration......... wink.gif

While there are a lot of uses for Potassium Pemanagate from sterilizing water to removing snails from plants and treating fungal infections, I would just like to add a word of caution. Please keep this chemical away from other flammable products as it can cause serious issues.

Oh yeah, definitely! exactly.gif

PP, in the presence of other known chemicals can cause explosions (as I understand it). So take care on how well and where you store it. Pay attention the the MSDS reports that are available all over the internet........ wink.gif
