Well, I've got a baby! A couple a weeks ago a friend was looking at my fish and noticed a baby. I had briefly noticed it b-4 but thought is was the last of my dieing neons. It really had no colour but my neons all got very pale b-4 they died (I've given up on neons for now). Anyway, there is one single baby and I'm not even sure if it's a swordtail or a platy yet. I think it's a swordtail. It's about 3/4" long and starting to get red colouring. Very cute! and getting very brave and swimming with the rest of the fish. He only came out at feeding time b-4. I'm assuming there was more than one born but this is the single survivor. I didn't know they were there so they got no special feeding. There is a fair bit of plant cover but since I never found any dead ones and my filter intakes are covered with sponges (I lost a few neons to the filter intakes) I guess the rest got eaten. My tank is well understocked so this new little cutie is a welcome addition. My question - how many babies might there have been?

This is my first fish baby and I feel like a proud Mom! biggrin.gif Probably shouldn't be so proud since I let all the rest get eaten. ignore.gif

I know how you feel. I had Neons years ago and they are hard little boogers to keep up. Mine just seemed to start dying one at a time for no apparent reason. Good luck with the baby.

Thanks Sandie. She's (?) doing well. Swimming with the rest of the crew and growing like a weed!

I read somewhere that platies can have around 30 babies at a time. That's so cool about your little one. Maybe you'll have more in the near future?? biggrin.gif

I have counted 10 for my first set of babies. Unfortunately all but one of them survived. I know how you feel about them getting eaten, but still, at least you have a survivor! Survival of the fittest I guess. But she will probably do well. When they are small fry they don't have much coloring to begin with but then they get it later on.
