They are but also SO beautiful, I have a bit of a soft spot for them. My friend had one which got huge, but the funny thing was he was very timid. blink.gif

Chrissy, are they more mild mannered when they are alone? I know a school of Piranahs are absolutely viscious.

A family friend I know owns a huge tank with 10+ piranha. They are timid when alone because they get frightened. They should be kept in schools or at least pairs. They feel vulnerable when alone.
She feeds them small Cornish game hens, beef heart and de-feathered quail.

Not my type of fish. I would rather own pacus which are a LOT more friendly but they get so massive that they can bust the glass on tanks.

Either way, both are too expensive to care for. I'll stick to fish that like cheap food instead of $5 hens 2-3 times a day. lol.

I would love to have pacus one day but I think it will be a building job outside lol. Was thinking a 12 by 12 ft concrete pool smile.gif maybe bigger ^^

Piranha's are beautiful fish and there are many breeds of piranha. Most common one we tend to see is the red bellied piranha. There was a case here in UK reported in PFK Magazine where a red belly piranha bit through its owners hand during a move to a larger tank as the fish was frightened. There has been a good documentary on Piranha's on discovery animal planet covering all piranha breeds in their natural habitat.

I had a similar idea. I was going to build a 1000 gallon "tank" for a pair of pacu, an arowana and some large plecos but since I've only lived in this area for 1 year I would like to wait and monitor the weather a bit more.

Pacu are so lovely.

I got an offer not to long ago for 2 free piranhas. i turned it down though because i dont have the space, or the money for these guys.
