Gosh yes. It's called Bare-Bottom. My two bug eyes are in a barebottom right now. It's soooo much easier to keep clean!

smile.gif Many of us here have tanks that are bare bottom. They are great! Sometimes takes a little while to get used to, and many will add something like fake or real plants to add to the tank. There are many advantages to bare bottom tanks such as ease of cleaning, no place for bad things to hide and grow and uneaten food does not get buried and cause problems. Also not to mention the risk of your fish choking on or swallowing gravel or pebbles. So, yes it is OK not to have any substrate in your tank.

In fact, I just made my guppy fry tank barebottom. It just has two fake plants in it now, and it looks soooooo much better. The gravel was new and making it all cloudy. Yuck.
