i'm going on vacation for five days; and am rather skeptical about allowing others to feed my babies blink.gif , ....is five days too long w/out food?

Can you get anyone to feed your fish when you go away?

Maybe some plants to eat?

Be sure to check everyting is perfect before you go away.

I wouldn't buy those vacation feeder blocks. They can really screw up your water chemistry while you are away. Others have had tragedies involving those.

Get lots of yummy plants to stick in your tank (anacharis are a favorite for my goldies), feed them well before you leave, and they will be fine. If you are concerned, why not put a very small amount of food in a container, HIDE all other food, and ask someone to stop by and dump it in the tank about halfway into your absence. Do not let someone just feed your fish - you'll have to measure it out for them in containers for each day you want them to feed. People do not understand how much food to give and they WILL overfeed. I put a day's worth of food in a baggie, labeled with the date, and hide all the other food while I am away. My hubby has told me that he won't be able to restrain himself from overfeeding them, and I take his word for it. smile.gif

If your fish are healthy adults and normally well fed, 5 days will not hurt them in the least. In fact, it may do them good - clean out the insides nicely.

If you do decide to have someone come in - or if there is ANY chance that someone may be there for any reason (not specifically even to feed the fish!) HIDE all the fish food. Do not give anyone the opportunity to feel sorry for them and dump a whole bunch of food in the tank - fouling it.

I have fasted fish for up to 10 days with no problems. When the temperatures fall in the winter, the fish go dormant and fast for months. So.....do not feel badly about fasting them. smile.gif

agreed. if theyre young, fasting them might make em a little starved. but healthy fish wont be hurt a bit. 5 days is nothing. 10 days as mentioned is awesome to clean em up, give em a little rest time.

the dissolving vacation food has never caused me any problems smile.gif I use them all the time when were gone for a couple of days, they didnt mess up my water at all, maybe it depends what type you buy, we use wardley vacation food and its safe for goldies, but as was said they wont starve, I read that it is virtually impossible to starve fish unless you're actually trying to starve them cause there are some nutrients in the water.
