out my 55 gallon bio-filter. It hadn't been done in 2 years and boy oh boy, was it nasty. yikes.gif I have netting in one part of it and it was just caked together with pond sludge. Not only was there a load of pond sludge but I had blood worms all over too. I didn't know they would or could grow in there. The ones I could pick out the fish ate. I am making a promise to myself to make sure I clean it out every fall now. That was just too gross. So it's no wonder the pond water is still green.

If you can keep water running through it all winter the best time to do the deed would be late fall. Thank god I live in florida. If lived as far up north as yourself I would have to change my whole koikeepig philosophy.

There is no way to keep water running through it all winter. I think I will start cleaning it out in the fall when I shut the pond down. I do clean out my other barrel every fall so I may as well do this one too.

I am glad it's over. The things we do to enjoy our ponds. wink.gif

Good going, Debi - nasty chore to do. Somehow I am reminded of my plant filter at this moment. Hm, what could I possibly do this weekend? biggrin.gif

Yukk, I bet it stunk too, right? ill.gif You know, pond work is rewarding, isn't it? You do all this disgusting mucking out of stuff, but once you see those happy critters, it's all worth it!

It is all worth it but it sure didn't seem it when I was cleaning it out. I still can't see the fish real well. I did finally get my Hyacinths and water lettuce out there last night so hopefully they'll help clear it up.
