Full Version: Disinfecting Water Hyacinths

It's the time of year for the hyacinths to be coming in again and I wanted some for my patio pond. I usually disinfect all my plants with about a 10% bleach solution. How do you pond people treat your plants? I know the hyacinths have those delicate, feathery roots and I would be afraid of damaging them if they couldn't handle the bleach.

I normally just soak them in miracle grow for a couple of days and toss them right in. I've never disinfected them. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Yea, I never did anything although I asked same question some time back. I tossed in 5 bunches about 3 weeks ago. Now I have a couple of flowers! I guess it is possible for some parasites or other organisms to transport via water hyacinth but probably not too common. BTW my fishes are fine so far.

I always disinfect my plants just to be safe. You never know what could be lurking on them, and sometimes they are brought from people who are growing them in ponds with fish. For me, the risk of not disinfecting is too high!
