At least something possitive going on besides the koi disaster this morning - the koi that my hubby put in the spawning tank yesterday laid eggs this morning - literally 1000s! All over the walls, bottom of the pond, and on the spawning material. We took the parents back out, drained the pond (160 gl rubbermaid) down to about 1 ft, and put airation in it.
I can't wait to see them hatch in a few days - great, another 2000 mouths to feed.... The female is a 2 ft Sanke, and she looks so much slimmer now. Daddy is kind of hard to tell, there were 2 males in with her. Anyway, something good to report besides the dead fish....

Yeah, pretty much same color and all, just a tad bigger, but not by much. Water is a little cloudy now from all the action last night - koi tend to make a mess when spawning, and it always looks like somebody took a bubble bath. Water is changed already, so it will get better by tomorrow. I'll take a picture of the spawning mob full of eggs...

Wow ! Look at all those eggs ! So what are your plans? Are you going to try to have as many baby kois as possible and give them away? I am totally novice to spawning. But want to know what to do if I am in situation like this.

Have fun culling If my fish ever spawned...and they still have yet to do the deed I would be hoping for them too eat all of the eggs and the filter to get the rest.

Actually, the local fish store has interest in the koi. The owner buys 10 0f the 6 inch fish from last year and 2 of the big guys every single week, and sells them to pond owners in the neighborhood. Hubby only spawned the fish after the owner was so excited about getting more later in the year. Actually, I still have to get out myself and see if any hatching happened yet, and get the brewery started....

I pop in every couple of days now but just don't post as much.
Those fires are not in the TB area but when that wind shifts we get a heavy dose of it. Last friday was bad.....real bad. There were people wearing masks everywhere....even driving in their cars with the windows up.
Missed you at the show this year. The competition was not as good but Mat from QK gave a great lecture that included live fish. If anyone goes to a show and Mat McCann is doing a lecture.....you must attend. Also did the wetlab but it kinda sucked. It was more of a sales pitch too use Vickis companies. Many people felt the same.

Yeah, the show - I just didn't feel like going. Somehow, it seems to me that each year the quality gets less and less since AFKAPS disappeared, and you know me - without goldfish, it is just half the fun.
Checked the eggs last night, and for some reason I don't think many will hatch. Hubby was wondering if water changes could do that - making them infertile, but I don't think so. Eggs close up after a few seconds, with or without the milt, and once they are closed, nothing can change their outcome, right? We'll wait another 1 or 2 days, and then we'll see....

Well, just a little update: the batch was no good. Nothing hatched, so we cleaned out the pond and tried again a few days later with 2 different females and 3 males. And this time we are in luck!

Hatching happened after 4 days, and they are 3 days old now. After a little counting we came up with an number anywhere between 1247 and 2079 - sorry, there are just too many to count. And when we think we have figured out where they all are, then somebody moves the spawning mob that is still in there, and it just keeps moving full of fish. So, now we are proud parents after all, and the feeding is just plain crazy. But they are so cute, and I try to get a picture of them. They actually come out pretty good with the blackness of the pond bottom as background. Their tummy is either green (from the algae on the walls) or pinkish from the daphnia/brine shrimp.

I give them daily water changes with a very weak fountain pump, and they do fairly well. So small, and yet already able to swim away from the suction like nothing is going on. Pretty strong, those little stick things.

Congrats on your new fry. Sounds like you have a ton of them, can't wait to see the pics.
