Just curious bout them. Our LFS had em in, apart from looking like half their scales had been torn off they had this long scales down their sides that were sorta odd LOL. Can anyone tell me anything bout em?

Yep, they do exist, someone had one here last year. Try googling and you can tell us all about them. smile.gif

mirror scales are great! I would love to have a pond so I could keep them! They're pretty much as you described them, a good example would be one with nice even big scales along the lateral and dorsal line and not too many stray scales elsewhere. I've heard a lot of people say that they are a koi/goldy hybrid, as there are koi that exhibit this interesting feature. That may be, but I think it could be a random mutation that has been bred up in goldies, I did a bit of research on them a year or two ago, and it seems to be quite a common mutation in various types of carp around the world..

I think they're beautiful, they look smashing in the sun with those big shiny scales! heartpump.gif

This isn't a pic of a goldfish, but a german mirror carp, as i mentioned in my previous post, it's a relatively common mutation, a good specimen in goldies will have a nice even line of scales down the lateral line, without too many stray scales here and there. I actually saw a comet today, he was the only one in this tank full of normal scaled comets, and although he didn't have the full 'mirror' patern, he had lots of odd sized and shaped scales, I would have loved to bring him home, but I don't have room... sad.gif

LOL! you'll never guess! I just bought myself one! I've wanted one for ages, and I told the guys at my lfs about a year ago to keep their eye out for a good specimen!... I guess it was too long ago for them to remember that I've been wanting one, but I'm glad I turned up yesterday!

I went shopping for Dave as he's got a small 10 gal setup in his office that he's been wanting a fantail for. Not only did I see those imperial yellow comets (see my other thread), but I saw a perfect mirrorscale comet, he's about 4 1/5-5 inches long with a perfect line of scales down either side of its body!.. I swore that I wasn't going to get any more, and I didn't walk out of the shop with it, but I dreamt about it last night, and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since we visited the shop yesterday... Me BAD! I called Peter (the goldfish guru at my lfs) and just told him to put it on hold for me, I'm going to go back down there today and pay for it... biggrin.gif

I've got a 20 gal rubbermaid set up outside that he's going to have to live in for now, but I'm hoping one day to bring him indoors to my big tank (currently treating for flukes. sad.gif )

I'll definitely post you pics of it when I get it home! biggrin.gif

I've been doing more research on them, and it looks like they really could be koi/goldy hybrids, aparently the mirrorscale koi were bred using these german carp! so maybe it's not as common as I once thought... I'll keep trowling the web to see if there's any good documentation on this.

-Sorry to keep posting, but I'm so excited to have one! krazy.gif biggrin.gif

Well, we'll see, I'm expecting my aunt and cousin to drop round any minute now for a catch up and cake, so after that, I might see if I can get them to drive me down to the lfs to buy/pick up my new fish! : wink.gif

I can't find anything on Google about mirrorscale comets.
I even tried ask.com, and they didn't have anything!
I guess that's all I can say.
