When I moved my new telescopes from quarantine to the aquarium they started doing the spawning thing. I was glad when they stopped as I've never been too keen on breeding. Well... tonight when I went to clean the tank I found three fry! ohmy.gif Couldn't help but put them into a small 5.5 gallon tank with a sponge filter. Now I gotta figure out how to take care of fry. krazy.gif

Thanks Fred. I'm so proud. Wish I could pass out cigars to all my online goldfish friends. smile.gif

We'll see what happens.

OMG... they are so small I don't think I could get a picture of them. Most of the time I can't even find them. smile.gif Maybe when they get a bit older.

I went to Petsmart this am to get stuff to hatch brine shrimp. That is new to me, hope it works out. I'm worried they'll starve before the shrimp are hatched. So, just in case, I thawed a frozen daphnia cube and put a few of those in there. Does that sound reasonable?
Devs
yikes.gif The fry continue on.This has been a heck of an end to winter. rofl3.gif
Congrats to you Jim.
Are those little guys free swimming yet?
I started out with Hikari First Bites until the shrimp hatched.
As you know, there are loads of fry threads right now,so I'm sure that you'll be reading alot. biggrin.gif
That's what I want,Tele fry,and okay,maybe a few Ranchu or Lionhead.
Once again congrats!
vmlola
Congrats on your fry, three is a nice number to start with. Pics and updates please.
dknygrlie4
congrats on your microscopes!! my favorite. good luck with the new bundles of joy. smile.gif

Microscopes??? rofl3.gif Very cute! Congrats! I can't wait to see pictures when they are large enough!
Sonny
I lost one. sad.gif Not sure what happened to it but I can't find it in the tank. The other two are swimming around quite a bit now and seeming to enjoy their brine shrimp snacks. I think I can even make out a split tail on one of them. They are still very small but it is amazing how much easier it is to spot them than a few days ago. I think they must be growing at a very rapid rate.
Trinket
Good luck with these 2.
Have you got cycled media in the tank for them?
Sonny
For now am using an air-driven sponge filter that I seeded using a sponge from my quarantine tank.

That's good to hear. When I first had fry I didn't know what to do...panicked!
Congrats again smile.gif

Congrats again smile.gif

I've never actually tried to raise fry before so this is definitely new to me. Had a few commons manage to survive in my pond but that was completely by accident and good fortune. Thankfully there is so much information here to help me out. exactly.gif

Thanks for the well wishes. It is exciting for sure and I am anxious to see what they will grow into.
Ranchugirl
This spring truely has its shares of fry popping up left and right! Boy, I can't remember any spring as crazy as this one. Imagine how big the kindergarden class is going to be in the fall, when we all see updated pictures of the little ones! biggrin.gif :thumbs
Sonny
A few pics of the babies. Out of many attempts these are the best, sigh...

They look fabulous! Really good. Good job biggrin.gif

biggrin.gif I love it when they get those big pink underbellies from eating all the shrimp.
They look nice and healthy. smile.gif
Sonny
Thanks guys! It helps to hear that since I don't know what I'm doing. blink.gif
Trinket

How are your fry doing sonny?
Sonny
Imogen, I *think* they are doing well. They seem to be growing fine, I'm having trouble keeping enough brine shrimp available for them. They are eating so much more than they did in the beginning. The water is starting to look a little bit cloudy and that has me concerned a bit.
bluiis
They are sooooo cute, congrats. I look forward to seeing pic's as they grow

They look like they are doing very well. Like some of my bigger ones. Good job!

Have you rinsed the filter media yet and have you sponged the bottom ever so gently..? I presume you have. I did my first actual inside filter rinse the other day..before that I was just rinsing the hose on the outside. I can see clearer water now.

Anyway these 2 little guys look fabulous, the hardest part is over once the red bellies develop a seam and knit up all round to make the complete belly of the fish, which yours have and most of mine have now smile.gif

smile.gif They're looking great Jim and growing by leaps and bounds.Great pics! smile.gif

So far all I've done is use a baster to remove sediment from the bottom of the tank and replaced about 10 percent of the water that I removed when doing so. Guess it's time to do a little more cleaning.
Trinket

Well, You only have 2....I was doing about 15% to 20%w/cs daily up until a few days ago (14 fry) and then I did a 40%..ooh did that feel good smile.gif I think they're big enough now.
Sonny
I thought I read on one of the fry care sheets that you shouldn't change the water during the first 30 days. That's why I have been shy about changing the water (it's also a lot easier that way biggrin.gif ). Now that I see you're doing more water changes I'll feel more comfortable doing so.
Trinket

I have to say I do the w/c's using a very small baby cup and it takes a long time! Pouring each cup back just under surface water level very slowly and taking the water out with a spoit and the small cup. It is nothing like water changes for adult fish. This is a delicate operation. I lost fry at water changes in the after swirl the last time I had fry and it made me this fanatic. It's your call if you wait or do one now sonny, I would hate to be responsible if anything were to go wrong blink.gif All I can say is, my fry have been fine doing it this way smile.gif .
Trinket

sonny- I checked my fry diary. I started doing daily water changes of approx 15 -20% from day 7 as recommended by ranchu breeder Kroshinsky (in Erik Johnson's "Fancy Goldfish"). Maybe there are differing opinions on it.
Sonny
Thanks Imogen! I have that book but hadn't consulted it for my fry care. (I primarily use it for Dr. Johnson's medical advice.) I will check it out today.

smile.gif Wow, they look great! I missed the pics from the other day. The third pic looks like hes thinking, "And what do you think your looking at?"! Really cute. You are doing a really good job with them.
Sonny
Here are a few shots of the babies at 4 weeks. Happy Birthday to you! birthday.gif

I'm doing some water changes now and they are learning to eat some Progold and daphnia. I'm thinking they may need a bigger tank/filter soon. unsure.gif

smile.gif I'm thinking they are going to need a bigger tank also! They have really grown and look wonderful. exactly.gif You have done a great job and your babies are proof to that!
dknygrlie4
wow....they grew so much! you're probably right about needing a bigger tank! they grow like weeds.
Trinket
Your fry are looking just great, shiny and ...fat rofl3.gif Just as they should be! Good job!!
Sonny
I'm really pushing my luck with these guys because today I named them. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a jinx. The bigger one is Hubble (get it? smile.gif ). And the smaller of the two is Magnifry. I will call her Maggie for short. smile.gif They are still the greenish color. I'm wondering if they'll be colored like the Mom. She's a brown/green and white telescope.

Here they are at 5.5 weeks. I apologize for the pictures, they came out kind of dark.

Good grief they are grOWing soo fast! They look just fabulous Jim, shiny and deep bodied. Hubble has a very impressive almost ryukin hump going on there heartpump.gif and magnifry/Maggie is cute with a nicely shaped broad shaped tail..great names 2 smile.gif .
Sonny
Thanks Imogen. They are growing well but I'm getting impatient for something to happen color-wise. sad.gif Maggie's tail is looking good. I'm hoping it will be nice and flat. I must say that it has been so interesting watching them develop.

They have been weened from live baby brine shrimp and now get Progold, frozen daphnia and frozen blood worms. I'm also considering moving them into my aquarium with their parents because they need more room. Not sure if that is a good idea or not. An alternative is to put them into a spare 100 gallon stock tank outside for a while. That would probably be enough room for them for a while. smile.gif It's just harder to keep a close eye on them when they are in a stock tank. idont.gif

Happy 3 month fry Sonny biggrin.gif My fry hit their 3 month birthdays yesterday too. How are yours doing and what color did they eventually turn out? Dieing of curiosity here hide.gif
Sonny
Thanks Imogen! Happy Birthday to your fishes too. exactly.gif

Mine didn't ever change color really. They're both still a brown/green color, the smaller one is almost black. I'm kind of disapponted because I was expecting a dramatic color change that never happened. sad.gif

I'll try and get some pictures soon.
Sonny
It's not a good picture but you can get an idea of their color (such as it is rolleyes.gif). I guess if I wanted to sell them on eBay I'd call it a 'very rare green coloration' wink.gif

small_ranchu
They look great and huge.. congrats man... smile.gif
Chickey
They look great! I love the names you gave them too! biggrin.gif
Trinket

Well there may not be much going on yet with color but look at the shape of those 2!! They look just perfectly shaped. Perfect fins and that round deep body that telescope fish should have. They are sweet heartpump.gif

And they are sure to change color eventually Jim. I have yet to see an adult fish with that green gold fry color smile.gif And that fry black often disappears too and an under color or colors emerge. They are like little surprise layered packages biggrin.gif .
Sonny
Here's what they look like 10 months on. One's not even a telescope! rolleyes.gif

Oh, man...now I GOTTA get on a computer outside this stupid clean room ... one that lets me get PICTURES!!!!!
