What are the different styles of wens? Could someone post pictures of each kind? When I pick out a young oranda, how can I tell what kind of wen it will have?

Well I'm not really sure but the only ones that I known are the red cap wens where the wen is obviously red and should stay red, a wen that grows but not over the face and my personal favorite the chubby cheek wen which grows over the cheek of the fish and makes it have the "chubby" look. I don't know how to pick out fish, but I'd say that you should look for fish that have a big wen relative to their size and are young.

Here are a couple pics of my dearly departed orandas Fred Jr. and Sade to give you an idea of what wens can look like. The first two are Fred Jr. showing how a wen can grow to completely cover a goldies face and the last one is Sade with a more common type of wen.

They are very cute! Thanks for sharing pics!

You can also get a goosehead oranda like my darling Puppy (rip). Due to a malfunctioning modem and limited "connectivity" (as windows calls it) I am unable to access my photobucket account and post a pic.

You can have a look if you like, the account is called Fishmerised there would also be pics of him here in the pond section. But anyway, a goosehead oranda has a wen that only grows on the top of it's head like a curly mop of hair - very cute.

These are the ways that I prefer to categorize wens (just my own preference):

Cap - only on the top of the head, and when mature looks a bit like a poofy, rounded hat sitting on top, almost as if it's separate from the fish's head
Lionhead/full-face - extends from the top/back of the head to the mouth and over the gills/cheeks, giving a chubby appearance
Tigerhead (term from a Chinese site) - extends from the top/back of the head to the mouth, but does not cover the gills/cheeks
Crown - one or more distinct bubble-like growths on the top of the head, such as seen on the Crown Pearlscale

Here's an odd question: would the lower bubbles on a Double-Bubble be considered a wen element?

My oranda would be an example of a lionhead/full-face type, although when he was younger he had a tigerhead type.

A bit hard here to see how it covers his gills, but you can see how poofy his cheeks are.

Apologies for the blurriness of the one on the left.
