Full Version: Is Ginger Okay?

I just made some gel food for my goldies after reading the pinned gel food thread (awesome thread BTW) I used few types of organic baby foods from a really cool company that makes organic babyfoods with no preservative, they sell them frozen and I feed them to my birds cuz I know they are safe.

Anyways I added one that was a carrot, apple and ginger mix (very mild amount of ginger) When I added it I forgot it had ginger in it. krazy.gif The carrot ginger food only makes up about 5% the gel food total. I have seached this site for a reference to ginger and can not find any. Is ginger okay for goldfish or should I pitch the food and start over??

Thank You

It is only a small amount of ginger and may be harmless but I would still err on the side of caution and not use it. Ginger is a herb that has effects on the digestive system and these may not be so good for goldfish. I don't recall seeing it as an ingredient in any commercial fishfood either.

Do they make Tums for goldies? rofl3.gif Just kidding. Actually, ginger is supposed to HELP with heartburn and indigestion, not cause it, though I'm sure some people have adverse reactions to the spiciness. I'm sure that teeny tiny amount isn't going to be a problem, just leave it out next time to be sure. Ginger has a lot of health benefits for people, which is why they put it in baby food. It's good for gas relief, which is a common problem with babies - maybe a good thing for your goldies too, especially SBD ones. It also helps with inflammation (think aches, fevers, etc.). I don't know, maybe ginger might be a good experiment to try in a gel food for those at the end of their rope with SBD issues...?

How do your fish like the gel food? Mine are absolutely NUTS about gel food - they continue searching the bottom for scraps for at least 15 minutes after each feeding, desperate to find just one more bite! I don't think I'll be feeding anything else again besides fresh veg - it's got all they need anyway. Good luck smile.gif

I knew that ginger was supposed to be good for people I just was not sure about the fish krazy.gif As for the bite that it adds to food I suppose Garlic does the same and I put that is too cuz I saw it in a bunch of receipes.
I have not given it to my kids yet I think what I will do is try a small piece today see if they even like the stuff and then watch them closely for a day or two. I have four commons and they are pretty hearty little pigs. No SBD at my house (knocks on wood knowing it is not impossible for commons to have SBD) I will post later and let everyone know how the experiment goes, I would hate to have to pitch the whole amount cuz I kinda made a big batch.

Well I fed the fish this morning and they liked it. Well once they figured out that it was food, they were a little concerned at first, I am pretty sure I got the WHAT THE H*** mom look. They have never really had much variety..
They ate it all and no one has had any ill effects. All four fish are bright swimming happily poop is normal Oh yah and they are begging for more food!!!

Well, that's interesting - keep us updated on their progress and what their poops are like.

Well everyone is still great I just fed regular sinking pellets today just so I don't startle their systems to much. Poops look nice a normal as far as I can tell and they are all active and crazy as usual. I will try to keep this updated as I feed them more, but so far so good biggrin.gif

If all goes well with the adualt this week I think I will try to add some into the fry tanks next week so that the little ones have something to nibble on while I am at school, They always look so hungry when I get home and I think it will be good to get them used to some variety when they are younger

That's good news and we've learnt something new too. smile.gif

Just wanted to give a little update, I have continued to feed the gel food to the adults and they have come to LOVE it, they even seem to turn up their noses at the pellets now (well, for half a second anyways, they are such pigs!!!) I have even begun to give it to my fry so that they have stuff to nibble on when I am away and I must say that there is none left when I get home (They have their parents' appetites).
No one has had any sign of being off and all the stools look great biggrin.gif
So I guess a touch of ginger doesn't hurt YEAH!!!

I'm glad they're enjoying it. smile.gif
