Full Version: Where Did This Baby Come From?

I know nothing about goldfish, but I would like to know what people think of this story. I have a baby goldfish, but the more I read, the more in awe I am of this.

We had a one goldfish. It died. The tank sat empty with the filter going for about three months. We got a new fish-just one. We cleaned of the scummy plants and sprayed the rocks with water and put the new fish in with some of the old water and some fresh. The tank is 5 gallons I think.

A month later I was watching the tank and I seen a baby goldfish swimming around! It was hardly bigger than the head of a pin.

We took it out of the tank to keep it from getting eaten and put it in a large vase with water from the original tank. We gave it a large fish flake every couple of days. It is doing great. I came here to find out more about how to care for this tiny creature and now I'm astounded that the thing is alive. We don't have baby goldfish food, an areator, or a heater. i wonder even how the eggs were laid! Is this really weird? blink.gif

Very wierd ohmy.gif .

Better call him Jesus because I never heard of an egg hatching that didn't have the male melt sprayed on it.

Your new fish could have been gravid (laden with eggs) but I don't know how the egges would have been fertilised unsure.gif

are you sure its a baby goldfish?

When you transfered the new fish in, did you lift her with your hands into a dip bucket and then into the tank, or did you perhaps pour her into the tank - or even net her and put her in her tank?

Fertile eggs are nearly invisible. They stick to everything. When the store scooped out a bag of water, it is entirely possible that some eggs were scooped out of the tank. If there was any chance that these eggs were transfered to your tank - there you have it.

I have some "divinely created" fry, also. The nearest I can think is that the water was laden with enough milt that when I lifted the female fish from the one tank and placed her in her own tank that I transfered just enough milt to fertilize the next eggs she blew. (She was dropping eggs and I did not want her breeding with the male that was in there).

I "found" the fry - in the bare bottomed adult females tank - they never ate them! How strange is that? I have about a dozen little guys - they are actually not bad looking little ryukins!

Is it possible that these are some other sort of fish?

Brilliant clapping.gif ! Of course daryl! The eggs mustve come in with either the fs water or on the new fish itself. Two for the price of one.

newfish.gif Hey, thanks for the replies! It is very possible that we could've got the egg from the store, we did pour the fish and the water from the store right into our tank.

Now what? It's been eating our fish food flakes, but should we stop and find some baby fish food? Should we move it into it's own tank with a filter or a bubbler? When can we put it back into the tank with the adult?

And yes, it is really a baby goldfish. It is orange and has tiny fins and a tail and two black eyes and it swims all over the vase and nibbles once or twice at the food flakes. I think it's grown a little even.

It sounds adoreable heartpump.gif . Wish mine would grow as fast. I feed my fry frozen brine shrimp and hikari first bites.
I suppose you must be doing okay...are you changing water, how much and how often? They like warm water and no current.

I have my 2 in a breeder box in the main tank but your 5 gallon is too small to house a breeder box. So I suggest you leave him where he is and get a sponge filter which also provides a very gentle form of aeration that he will need as he grows. Is that possible?

If you cant attach a filter, you could very gently move all his water plus him into a large rubbermaid container and stick a filter on that. Be very careful moving him, so many people lose baby fish when moving them- the swirl of the water does something to their equilibrium. So, cup by cup very gently is best.

How big is the baby now in cms and how big is the other fish?
