My personal preference is for very neutral backgrounds, so that the focus is completely on the fish, decorations, etc. So I've got plain black backgrounds on all of my tanks (the dark color also adds visual depth to the tank.)
Recently, I've noticed that the black backgrounds from Petsmart have a gradated dark-to-medium blue on the other side that's also very nice. Again, very neutral, but with a more "deep sea" look. (And a vast improvement, imo, over the traditional bright, flat blue.)

Yep... I would agree...the back of the tank will soon be covered in purple coraline algae any way...so make it black or blue...what ever you prefer!!!

If it is still empty you can paint it with spray paint or brush it on. I like the brushing it better. no salt creep down the back of the tank. Also no taping or reappling after awhile. If you don't like the color you can just get a razor blade and scrape it off. It comes off pretty easily.
