Got the betta bug again so I set up a 29 gal. and I am going to cycle it before adding some females. How many would you keep in a 29? Please tell me your problems with keeping all females together. Does two work as well as 6? How much aggression can I expect and does it get serious?

If you are planning on keeping multiple females together you need at least 3 or they will fight as much as 2 males will. With 3 or more the agression is spread out between all of them so it is not a constant battle for the top spot in the tank between just 2 of them. As far as how much agression, that is up to the individual personalitites of the bettas. Most females are able to live in a community setting with other females, but some seem to think they should be the only ones in their tank.

You will also have to monitor their health very carefully as once one betta gets sick the whole tank is likely to get the same thing very easily. If you can keep them all healthy an all female betta tank can be an extremely beautiful tank indeed. Good luck. biggrin.gif

Be sure to provide a lot of hiding places like plants (fake or real). Introduce them at the same time & be ready for a few days of tussle between them while they're establishing their pecking order. If one got really aggressive, then u have no choice to take her out & isolate her.

I would say between 6 or 10. That should be plenty.

If you get young females they get use to each other much better than older gals. Also if you can find a place that keeps females together then go ahead and get those ones. Once they are you to each other you can remove them and put them back into the tank with no problems at all. When I would breed, sometimes I would have 5 females or just 2 in my female tank.

When you put them together, give them 24 hours and if one or two are being real mean separate them for a couple days and then try again. just do this over and over until they have calmed down enough to where they won't kill each other. VTs seem to be the calmest females of all. I had a little trouble with CTs and LOTS of trouble with my huge PK gal.

Another tip ... when purchasing your females, watch the tank for a while, and pick the least aggressive ones.

I started a tank of female bettas 3 years ago. I started with 7. After about 18 months, I lost the first one. Over the past 18 months, I slowly lost the others. I am now down to only one. Her tankmate died last week. She would have been about 3.5 years old. So, I only have one old girl now and she is sharing her tank with a snail.

I also have a 20 gallon tank that started with 4 female bettas ( I would have bought more at the time, but the store only had four; they were cohabiting peacefully in the store tank), 6 zebra danios and 6 white clouds, and a bristlenose pleco. They all get along fabulously smile.gif

Good luck with your female tank. They are lovely and I haven't had any problems with them getting along.

Thanks for all your input everyone. I bought 4 females and a male (for his own 6 gal.). Unfortunately they were in cups but they are young so hopefully when I bring them out of quarantine, they will do fine together. I only saw a female Betta tank once at one of the LFS's and I can't remember which one. I think I have some stores to hit. Maybe I can locate it and get a few from there as well. I remember they had some very pretty colors that I did not see when I got mine.
