Yes I know there are no goldfish in it atm but its set up the same way as my goldie tanks are.
The water has always been a tad cloudy but at first I put that off as the new gravel cloudy water. Today when installing an outlet expander so I can have the filter, lights, and air pump going at the same time I noticed that the filter intake tube, which is covered in pantyhose to keep the fry out, was dripping green water into the tank when i took it out to rinse off the stuff stuck to the outside of the pantyhose.
I have just finished a 6 month battle (and won!) against green water in my 46 gal goldie tank. My grandma swears she is gonna kill me if I let the 25 gal go green like my other 2 tanks did. The 25 gal is in the kitchen so she does not want a tank of green stuff in her kitchen when other people come to visit.
The cloudy looks exactly like my 46 gal did for 2-3 weeks before it went pea soup green for months. I know the fry are probably feasting off the algae in the tank but I really don't want green water. The tank is sitting along a wall and one of the skinny sides is next to an east facing window. Asked my grandma if the window filtered out the uv and she did not know so I put pritning paper along that side of the tank today.
The tank is planted, and ammonia and nitrite are 0. Nitrate is 10 or less. Water changes so far have been 20% once a week but going to start up to 2-3 times a week because of the fry.
I am willing to put more plants in or turn off the plant light, install a heater to raise the temp- if the fry could handle that, or anything else that does not involve dumping in chemicals that are supposed to "kill" the algae. Did that routine with the 10 gal before I knew the chemicals were hard on the fish and it still didn't kill the algae in there. I am also looking into a UV sterilizer for that tank but none in stock in my town atm.
Looking for what has worked for you in the past to get algae under controll or prevent in in your tanks.
