hello,

The prosect of a power outages is a concern to me. Sometimes these outages can last for days. I would hate to lose my fish to this. Has anyone heard of an alternate power supply to run the filter, e.g. battery powered? I already have a battery powered bubble maker and was wondering if anything is available to keep the filter running.

Thanks so much,

How about using sponge filter?

The batteries that are sold as computer backup are pretty good. Since fish equipment tends to be very low draw, you can run a filter and/or aeration for many many hours on a good sized computer battery. I found one that will run 9 tanks (filters & aeration) for about 24 hours for about $72 at Frys.(I only run ONE small filter per tank - drop media from the larger filters into the tanks and run a little one. All my tanks have multiple filters)

The air bubbler through a seasoned sponge filter will go a long way to preserve the life of a fish - as stated above. If you keep a sponge in the tank such that it is a platform for the beneficial bacteria. It will not work if it is not "cycled" into the system.

In the case of a power outtage of multiple days. You may wish to drop your media into the tank and run an airstone up through it - this will give you the equivilant of the seasoned sponge filter with only the power needs of the air bubbler. Fast the fish. Bubble the water through the media that is placed IN the tank and, with luck, all should be good.

Scary things - power outages......
