Full Version: Plants In Qt
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank

I have some new anacharis plants that have been in qt for the past 6 days. For the first couple of days I had them soaking in a dilute solution of Jungle WaterClear, which is a dilute solution of Potassium Permanganate. Then I switched to Jungle Parasite CLear which is supposed to be effective against most parasites. I was going to add the plants to my main tank today but when I looked I saw a small but very live snail in the qt plant tank blink.gif I am not sure how/why he was still alive since I thought snails were sensitive to both PP and PC. My question - what should I do now? I know that where there is one snail there are likely more and I am not sure about other parasites. I don't think bleach is the way to go though since I have read that anacharis (being a fine leaved plant) will be destroyed by bleach.

Any ideas? Thanks!

what I think you could do is to give your plant another round of the medication to play safe. and closely observe the plant during this period of treatment this time to see if you will find any other possible live snails or something like that.
If it is just snails it really won't be a big problem if your plant is to be placed in a goldfish tank as the fishes will more than likely eat them up.
but it is the parasites that you should be worry about so just to be safe do another round of treatment for the plant.

Ok, thanks. I added another round of the Water Clear and will wait a couple of days and then do another round of the PC. I was just surprised that the snail was alive after the first round. We'll see what happens now . . .

I wanted to say, I read on Aqua Botanic that Alum can kill snails and eggs effectively. I've no clue what it does to plants, but I imagine it's gentle, based on their dosage.

Here's the page:

Thanks. I did another dose each of the waterclear and the parasite clear and i still see snails on the plants. I am not sure that I want ot go to the trouble of buying and using the alum. Can the snails cause harm by bringing parasites or something else into the tank? Should I trash the plants to be sure? It would be hassle (and another 2 weeks) to have to start over with new ones . . .

From what I've read, snails can not actually "get" any parasites that infect fish. But if there is something in the water (e.g. some type of bacteria), it is possible that snails will carry it in their shells. However, any bacteria will likely have been killed by the WC and PC.

I used Had A Snail (see above link) as well as a round of parasite clear and that seems to do the trick. bingo.gif

if you are just worried about the snails.. I don't think they will be much of a problem. I have lots of snails in my tank too. They are actually in the overflow area as that is the only place where they would probably survive.(my goldfishes love eating them)

Hi again! no I'm not worried about the snails per say (I have 2 apple snails in a separate tank biggrin.gif ). I am just worried about what (if any) nasty they might bring in to my gf tank. I was told a while back that I should take my snails out of my gf tank (which I did which is why they have thir own place now) since they carry parasites which could affect the gf. But now I am not sure if this is true or not headscratch.gif
