A few weeks ago I purchased a chocolate apple snail. He is the cutest little thing ever, after relocating my pit bull oranda Patches, Davy Wheels now has free reign of a 20 gallon and seems to be having a ball with himself.

Although the first day I had him he did crawl out of a small opening and I found him sunning himself stuck to my kitchen window! blink.gif Wish I had a picture.

Anyway I'm planning on ordering a few snails from Peggy at Northern Snails and I'd love to see photo's of everyone else's. I love the blue, magenta & purple one's they are so pretty.

I'm also wondering has anyone bred colored apple snails? What colors were the offspring?

Looking forward to seeing all of your photo's!
glitterfish
biggrin.gif Ive had many apple snails and 2 jades bred. I had jades, chocolate, blue, ivory and yellows from them. They have all passed for some reason. I reloacted a bunch to Maceo and another person as far as I know theyre doing fine. I only have one snail left, Chaquita. Hes a big ole yellow beast. Here are pics of him.

When I first got him.

Now he is a beast! biggrin.gif

I have about 300-400 babies from both my ivory snails. One father is a wild and the other is a blue. They are to young to determine their color right now but I will try to get photos of my blues for you.

I've got loads of snail pics....here a few

Both of those were of the same snail, my male cana. Heres a couple of my female cana:

My Haustrum, I know he looks funny shaped but thats just the angle I took the pic

Wow those are some HUGE snails! Erin I love the striped snail photo, very cute!

Nick those cana's seem so tame and relaxed. My little guy is still not super comfortable being picked up and locks up tight when touched. Then again living with my terror of an oranda for a day I'm sure didn't help.

Thanks for the photo's! I can't wait to own a Cana....Someday...

Yay, I get to show off! biggrin.gif

Here are a few pics another applesnail member (Aquaria) took of some babies I sent her:

The whole group when I sent them- IPB Image
The same group about three months later -

Then some of the pictures I took (not nearly so nice)
My red rams (gathered into a cup for sale picture reasons) - IPB Image
Some of my spixis - IPB Image
And a couple adult brigs, from a picture I took for selling some of my "overstocked colors" on Aquabid - IPB Image

Yes, now I know how to take MUCH better aquatic pics, but I've been spending too much time photographing my fish since then and haven't gotten many snails on there. Sorry for so many posted, I love my snails!
Katalyst
Sushi I'd love to see your blues! I missed your post earlier while drooling over Nick and Erin's photo's. Wyofish those are some beauties! I've never seen a red snail, not sure if anyone sells them in Canada. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. I'm wondering in the large chain stores like the Pet-Mart do they have more then ivories and chocolates? There's one about 45 minutes away but if they have snails as cute as yours I'd be game for the ride.
wyofish
I know a seller in Canada that has about any color of brig you could want, but I don't know if she keeps rams.

smile.gif Great pics of all your snails everyone.I've had a few tons of snails in the last 3 years, and I've always enjoyed them, but when you start doing multiple snail/babies,they can be almost as much work as goldies. rolleyes.gif
Kat,trust me when I say that you don't need any Red Ramshorns.Believe me,you'll be happier if you find some magenta Apple Snails. exactly.gif
I have to say that after my Chewie passed,I've kind of lost interest in my snails.I still have some, but the only ones I let reproduce are the Spixi's. smile.gif
Katalyst
Awww Devs I've read all the Chewie threads and am sorry you lost him. cry3.gif There seem to be tons of Chewie babies out there though. smile.gif heartpump.gif

I've been reading about rams and couldn't agree more, I'll stick to the brigs. I'm still reading about them and am going to see how the one I have now works out before getting a bunch more. They sure do poop an awful lot! ohmy.gif

Spixis seem pretty cute too...

I just can't decide what I want to do empty planted tank, planted tank with a betta. Or snail tank. smile.gif The first one sounds the easiest. I think. blink.gif

Those are some great snails! How do you guys get them to grow so big? Mine always eat but never grow as big. Is there a certain medicine that you put in your tank with them or is it just the type of lighting or something. If you could please let me know that would be great!

Thanks!
Aimless
Here are a picture of my white mystery snail "Sherry" and my blue snail "Gary". The first snail's I have ever owned just got them 2 weeks ago.
Devs
biggrin.gif The couple pics of the big snails are snails ,that are meant to grow Big. Cana's,Haustrum's grow a lot bigger than your typical Pomacea bridgesii,or your Brig Applesnails.
Although in all fairness,I have to say that over time I had some fairly big Brig Snails, they just will never get as big as the other Apple's that I mentioned Fish&Bird Freak.
Apple snails will grow big and healthy with proper water params and ph,a daily selection of fresh greens and food, and a good source of calcium. If you're doing all of that, then they'll get as big as the breed determines. biggrin.gif
Devs
biggrin.gif These two were 2 of my biggest Brigs. They were a little over 3 years old in that pic.
IPB Image

Holy cow Devs those are some H U G E brigs! I haven't gotten any more snails as I've become greedy and my empty planted tank is going to become a QT tank for a goldie I'm hoping. My poor snail is in my 150 but inside a 4 gallon critter keeper at the bottom. Otherwise my oranda has taking to sucking on his shell and swimming around with him it her mouth! She's my maniac fish lol. Its also the only way he'd ever eat as well. Eventually I'll end up with a betta tank and stick him in it.

I'm going to the Fish Sempai's Farm tommorrow with Daust (Angela) and I'm so excited!

I wish it was tommorrow already I feel like a kid at Christmas! smile.gif

Thanks for posting your pictures!

Aimless I love that blue snail, its so pretty! heartpump.gif
Devs
yeah.gif Well,I sure hope that you and Angela will behave yourselves to some degree. And pssst...............
If you see any Black Bubble Eyes,or Black Celestials, let me know, for that is my new search. rofl3.gif
Katalyst
He's got em and does ship to the US. I've spoken to him about them. He has blacks, oranges, orange and white and cali bubble eyes. heartpump.gif At the moment I'm thinking I may end up with a telescope which would then mean I would need a sighted challenged tank and then bubble eyes here I come!
Peaches
wow, great looking snails. some of them are huge!!

i have a snail but he is still too small to take pics of smile.gif

My new Cana, it has such a pretty shell. heartpump.gif

IPB Image

I've only had this Cana less then a day and I'm already cracking up at him. Here he is holding on to his algae wafer for dear life so the babies cannot get at it. He has this look at about him like that says, try to take my wafer and see what happens!

He's very cute, and they really do have such funny personalities. biggrin.gif

Got a cute one of Chaquita tonight on top of the driftwood. biggrin.gif

Despite that the tank is kept at 74 degree's, it would look as if certian parties would like it a tad warmer in the tank. Crazy snails!

74? That's wayyyy to cold...
IPB Image

I'll just turn it up just a little bit, no one will ever know. rofl3.gif
IPB Image

Gah I'm cold! I thought you said you turned it up?!

rofl3.gif Very cute! I saw these over at Apple Snail and had to laugh. rofl3.gif
Katalyst
I was wondering when I was going to bump into your there Devs! I've been bitten hard. I wish I had more! I had 10 but the day after I got my shipment my ivory didn't make it. sad.gif

The two Cana's I have are the funniest little things...Always into something they shouldn't be. I think they are both males though and seem to be in an amorous mood much to my apple snails dismay. When the 150 gets a bit warmer in they'll go!
Devs
I've been there,so I know how you are feeling. biggrin.gif At one point,I had ,well let's just say--tons of snails. After 3 years,I have to admit that the novelty has worn off quite a bit-especially after I lost Chewy. heartpump.gif
I do have a few old Brigs, and I still keep Spixi's as they won't quit breeding rolleyes.gif ,but that's about it now a days. I really did enjoy them, but once you start hatching and multiplying your snail purchases and snail Tanks,I think they're harder work than the Goldies. biggrin.gif I have been filling some of those empty snail tanks with Goldies. wink.gif rofl3.gif
As for Apple Net,I still go over on occasionn to keep up with people and news,I just don't post as much as I use to.
Katalyst
I figured it would be a little crazy when the little one's get bigger I'll id them if I can and keep them seperated I think. I'm trying to find a few more magentas and dsp's though. I wouldn't mind have a few more of those. A lfs has expressed interest in the colored snails should I have clutches. One of the fish room managers is a 'snail person' and said they'd give me store credits for some snails so we'll see. The only reason I'd even give them snails is because at least I know there is something there who really cares about them. Now if we could get lfs clerks to stop telling people they don't need to feed their snails! Gah..One of them looked at me like I had 16 heads when I asked where the calcium was kept for snails. Ahhh never mind...

Anyway...

At the moment for the first time in 5 months I am not overstocked and am just trying to relax a little.

Which basically means someone be it snails or fish will lay eggs or something. Murphy's Law and being half Murphy I have double coupons in the M. Law dept. wink.gif

Gosh! whaT a great looking bunch of snails! I've just recently gotten my first two snails, and i'm enjoying learning all about them! They are apparently mystery snails, which i understand may be a bit of a misnomer. One is black and one is white. One is in a 5 gallon with some guppies and one is in a 10 gallon with our Nemo. So far, Nemo has completely ignored the snail. The guppies have checked out the white one, but don't seem too interested. I'm still figuring out the basic care of the snails - the petstore said that they would eat algea, but i'm learning that there is more to it than that. I think i'll start with algea wafers, and go from there. Any advice would be welcome! I'll take some pics soon.

Hey Dana,

Thanks for the kind words they are cute in their own slimy way I guess. smile.gif A great site to check out is http://www.applesnail.net/

Once you get to the site look on the left at the green boxes with topics inside them. Find the word DISCUSSION and it will take to you the snail forum. Lotsa great information and very nice people on the site. My user name is the same as it is here. smile.gif Hope to see you there. wink.gif

The clutches are at least controllable if you don't happen to save every single one of them rolleyes.gif ,of course. my clutches always seemed to have a 100% hatch rate. blink.gif
Susan Mast over at Apple Snails had some beautiful pinks and Magenta's that I've gotten from her before, that were beauties.I hate to even look at them as you get that itch. rofl3.gif
I'm happy with my Spixi's though right now. They stay small in comparison to the Brigs/Cana's and I love their stripes. I swear they're eating my plants though I haven't busted them yet. rofl3.gif
I do have to say that Chewie has left a hole, and I've been quite tempted to get another....
~^~Jenny~^~
when i got a live plant from PETCO i guess it had 3 tiny black snails on it, but after about a week i could not find them anywhere. Is it possible that my fish ate them? Or maybe i sucked them up with tha gravel cleaner?

Maybe. Check your filter -- dead snails are not pleasant for your water chemistry. However, if you can't find them there, now you know your fish enjoy a bit of escargot. smile.gif

Here are a couple asolene spixi snails I got from RainbowSnails. Arent they the cutest? heartpump.gif

I love Spixis! My snails are from Peggy over at Northern Snails...She sent me a spixi and a cana as a little surprise. The cana's just crack me up and my spixi seems to like surfing on my moss balls which are floating around the tank at the moment.
Devs
Nice Spixi's Erin! That is one snail that I have hung on to and have even let a few of their clutches hatch,I think that besides Pink/Magenta Brigs, that they are probably my next favorites. exactly.gif

I was really happy with my barebottom tank but because of my dare devil snails, I will soon be adding gravel. My wacky cana and spixi's favorite pasttime is surfing around on my moss balls. I was just glad the filter ended up cutting the ride short when it sucked in the moss ball.

Well here i am finally with pics of one of my new snails, Kiki. She is an albino mystery snail, so the petstore lady said. Kiki is one of my two first snails, and i am jus so facinated by them. I never knew that snails would be so absorbing to watch. Anyway, here's kiki:
