I have a very pretty calico bubble eye goldfish in my 75 gallon tank. I also have two small ranchu's, one fancy goldfish who has the body of an ordanda and one big bubble on the top of her head, and two medium sized "what used to be pandas but now are pretty much just white fancy goldfish. My bubble eye has a very special place in my heart. He is the one that I am allways make sure he is ok because he is really helpless. Any of the other fish that want to pic on him do and he never has a clue that it is comming because his eyes are on the top of his head. There have even been times that I have had to chase the ranchus around the tank and kind of pick on them a little to make them back of my poor bubble.

About a year ago he popped one of his bubbles and I had to keep him separate from the rest for sometime because the other fish would approach him and grab his torn bubble and start shaking back and forth to rip off and eat a piece of it. His bubbles are in my opinion way to large. eats and when he swims around and works himself up as he breathes his bubbles actually get sucked into his mouth. He has to shake them and then grab some food when he eats. The broken bubble did grow back but not as large as the orginal or the other one that has never been torn. I have to say it seemed that when the broken bubble was growing back he seemed to get around better and eat better. He seemed happy that that bubble was not in the way.

My question is one of his bubbles is way way to big. It is litterally sucked in everytime he takes a breath. I am allways worried that he might one day suficate on it or it will prevent him from eating. I would like to pop that bubble and let it grow back the same size as the broken bubble is so that he can have balance.

Has anyone ever done this. And is it an ok thing to do. I do not want to do anything that might not be in the best interest of my fish. And at the same time I can't take him to the fish plastic surgeon for a bubble reduction.

Your fish is a bubble-eye, and the bubbles will, in varying degree, get in the way. That's how they're bred. Don't do anything with the other bubble, don't even think about popping it. By popping the bubble, you are harming your fish and invited bacteria and other bad bugs to take advantage.

I agree with d_golem. Popping bubbles can lead to serious health risks. Your fish was lucky not to suffer a serious infection when he ripped his first bubble. You may need to consider hand-feeding if you feel his bubble is obstructing his ability to eat.

It is recommended that ranchu are not kept with bubble-eyes. If you keep the ranchu with these fish I think there are going to be a lot more problems down the road. I have a bubble eye and keep her with another visually challenged fish ( telescope eye )- any other kind will inevitably pick on this slower poor sighted fish.

Your bubble would be fine in a tank with your ex-panda telescope 2 smile.gif

It is also a good idea and you probably know this, to put sponge filter around the bottom of the filter to protect bubbles and to take care there are no sharp edges anywhere in the tank ..including gravel for this delicate fish.

Imogen is right Bubbles eyes should only be kept with their own kind or Celestials or telescopes.Your Bubble eyes will manage but it would be best to separate it from your Ranchu.
With Bubble Eyes I use a barebottom tank for mine less risk of injury.
