We were out shopping last weekend and for some reason, we just naturally gravitate toward pet stores. I don't know how or why it happens. But I did come out of the store with a new little friend. smile.gif

We looked through the tank and J.D. and I decided this guy was about the saddest looking one. He couldn't even pull himself into his shell, so we brought him home. I estimate him to be about 15 years old or so. He happily changed into a new turbo shell right away.

Wow what a handsome looking hermie! PP, I presume?

PS: Does hermit crabs have any minimum stocking area/volume like goldfish?

AWWWWW!!!!! Every time I see your new hermies it makes me want a crabitat so badly!! Maybe one of these days, after I am out of school, I can't imagine having to move all that sand! flex.gif

Yep, he is a purple pincher or Caribbean hermit crab. Years ago I had the pleasure of seeing these guys in their natural habitat in Puerto Rico. My sister and I were walking along the beach in the dusk when all of the sudden, the cliffs started to come alive! Hundreds and hundreds of hermits started crawling out of all the cracks in them. It was amazing!

Like with fish, there's no way to tell exact crabby ages, but you can estimate by their size. Oh and I have no idea how many I have. I don't always know when I've lost one because soemtimes they burrow and never come back up. I have between 15 and 20 probably.

Haha, that's great, a regular crab colony!!! What do you keep them all in?
After only 2 months we're about to upgrade ours to a bigger tank already. heartpump.gif

I saw a hermit crab on the beach here. One of the saltwater varieties. It was sooo little, and this almost clear white color!

I owned one of the land ones for 2 years before it died sad.gif

It was named, what else, "Crabby"

Jenny you are so sweet, rescuing that little guy. I bet he thinks he has died and went to Heaven.

I too like to hear and see your crabs, don't know why but you make it sound so cool.
