how many people here have them and do you think I should get one. smile.gif
orandaplay
Im thinking about gettting one for my b-day! what do you think?

If you have a proper set up (10+ gallons...preferably +) with good filtration and learn as much as you can before getting the fish then I don't see why you shouldn't get one. Orandas are fairly easy to keep as far as golfish go and with a big tank and good filtration among other things they can make great fishie friends smile.gif

What kind of set up were you thinking of? You are planning to cycle the tank before getting the fish right?
orandaplay
sure i would i have a 20 galllon tank .
orandaplay
well what i really want to know is how can you tell if its a male or female
orandaplay
i want a male . Not for breeding or course
SusanH
Once they get any size to them it's pretty easy to tell. Look at their vent, just below their tailfin, and if it is completely flat, you have a male! If there's a slight protrusion, you've got a girl smile.gif

(You can do koi the same way)

Personally, I love Orandas! My first goldfish I really wanted to learn about and do everything I could for, was an Oranda. They're precious fishies smile.gif!

thanks for letting me know that

I know for sure that Orandas are my favorite fish that I have had the chance to own. Once you have been keeping fish for awhile I would also reccomend pearlscales but only after you have some experience.

Hey, is there any way you can make your siggie smaller? Its just too big. Its a pain when you scroll through a topic and someones sig takes up half the page. Thanks smile.gif
sandy
Orandaplay your sig is lovely but its way too big. Can you downsize it?

I would also like to add that you are going to want 10x filtration for your 20 gallon. So your going to want to have a filter that can handle 200 gallons per hour. I would also like to add that orandas can get quite big. in some cases 10 inches in length.

If you only get one oranda it should be able to live its life out in that tank. (10 plus years) With good filteration 10 x and water changes. But if you get more fish you well have to upgrade to a bigger tank. Is that possible? Love the picture of the red cap very pretty.
Good to see you thinking before you buy.

I have a golden oranda (still to take pictures - but I will soon!), and I have to recommend them 100%. They're fiesty, confident and impressive - I love mine to bits.

They're tough too. Definitely get an Oranda!!!

I love my oranda.

He nips my fingers when I stick my hands in the tank : ) Very interactive.

I didn't used to like them, actually. Whenever we'd go to fish stores (which was way more often than you'd imagine for two people who didn't own fish! but I loved goldies and my boyfriend wants a fancy salt water tank some day too) my boyfriend would ogle the big brains and I'd be like ewwwww!

But when I wanted new fish I decided to get a big brain as a surprise for him and now he is my favorite fish : )

And he is growing like WHOOOAAAA. My first fish looks the same size as the day I got her but I can already see growth in my oranda and I've only had him for a month!
