Hey! I dont know how many of you know about the recent ice storm that hit in my state which is Missouri, but it was bad. We had no power from Friday night to Monday night. Which means there was no heaters or filters going in my tanks becuase we had no electric. FYI i have 7 fish tanks. When i checked on the fish on Sunday when i was getting clothes to go over to a friends house all my tropicals were dead except for my cherry barb and my goldfish. My goldfish which are 2 calico fantails lived (these were in a 10 gallon with perfectly good water becuase i was checking) and so when i cleaned out the 30 gallon i decided to put the goldfish in the 30 gallon and I was wondering since i only have 2 calico fantails what other fish would look good in there. I am wanting the following:

1. something to eat the uneaten food off the bottom
2. algae eating fish
3. colorful fish

Should i get another goldfish and a chinese algae eater? Could i get another goldfish and a snail? What could i get if i wanted another goldfish? Please let me know. I think the goldfish i have now are stunted becuase they have not changed size since i brought them home from the pet shop. PLease let me know!

Thanks!

Wow, that is so sad about your tropicals cry3.gif . You said you have 7 tanks, did the fish in all of them die??

As for your goldfish in their new big home, you could put one more goldfish in there. Just make sure it's a fancy, as opposed to a common because commons are much faster so would get the lion's share of the food. Other fancies inclue black moors, ranchus, lion heads, pearl scales...

As for cleaning the bottom, you could try a snail, but your goldies may eat it. Bristle nosed plecos are supposd to be good too.

My fish in 6 of them died becuase the only surviving fish are:
2 goldfish
1 cherry barb

So i could get another goldfish and a bottom fish (like a snail or bristlenose pleco)

The bristlenose pleco- i have looked for those at my pet store and they dont have them, what other fish could i get becuase i have looked at the stores.

I would recommend getting EITHER a bristlenose plec or a goldfish, not BOTH, because bristlenose plec is as messy as a goldfish.

Oh and don't get the chinese algae eater: known goldfish slime-coat sucker they are smile.gif

smile.gif Hey,how's it going.Haven't seen you in a while.
Sorry to hear about your fish.
I'm in agreement with Riz ,If your filter's up to handling another goldie, then that's fine, but I'd leave it to that and forget about the Bristlenose. They do add a lot of waste/require wood as part of their diet, and also need a variety of fresh cooked veggies to keep them healthyas they can not live on just algae alone.. smile.gif

I have decided to get another goldfish and one apple snail for the 30 gallon. Please take a trip to the tropical section and help me over there with the topic about what to put in a 10 gallon. Thanks.

With goldfish you don't need another fish to eat off the bottom. The goldfish will search for and eat whatever food hit the bottom.

Any fancy double-tailed variety, but preferably not celestials or bubble-eyes cos they have special needs

Big-eyed goldfish are hard to keep with others!

I have a black moore (telescope), oranda, and fantail and I have to hand feed the black moore because otherwise he would get NO food.

It can kind of be a hassle if you're on your way out and you're feeding your fish and you're sitting there with little pellets gripped in the very tips of your fingers and you're shoving it in your fish's face to try to convince him to eat it and man you just gotta GOOOOO!

But if you don't mind that then I think it can work out : ) It's just a little more effort

If you decide to get a snail watch what type you get. Brigs (Pomacea Bridgesii) are the most common sold in pet stores and the only Pomacea species still allowed by the USDA. Brigs are great algae eaters as juveniles, but when they get older they'll only nibble on algae when they're very hungry and will need to be fed other food such as romaine lettuce, shrimp pellets, etc. A good source for snail cookie recipes is applesnail.net. Canas are your best eat-anything snail, but they get to about the size of a softball and have a huge appetite and water space requirement. They have also been deemed a pest by the USDA and are not permitted to travel interstate, as a result most pet stores do not carry them. Please do some very careful research before getting a snail, if you're wanting an algae eater this is probably not the pet you want.

I'd recommend any fancy tailed goldfish with the exception of telescopes, moors, bubble eyes and celestials to be kept with fantails. A lot of people don't have a problem with telescope eyed fish being kept with the other fancies, but I know that if I had it to do all over again, I would not be keeping them together. I constantly worry about if Leo (my moor) is getting enough food... he's growing fine, so I know it isn't the case, but it still makes me worry.

If I had two fantails, I'd probably choose an oranda, pearlscale or lionhead to live with them... but those are just my preferences. I know that ryukin sometimes have a reputation for being aggressive... but I'm not sure if that is just a bunch of people with bad luck.

Just remember that your goldfish need to have a filter capable of 300gph on your 30 gallon tank, so most likely whatever filter you were using for your tropical setup will need to be upgraded to handle the goldfish load. Additionally, I'd wait a month or more to make sure that the cycle is extremely stable before adding another fish.

I had planned on waiting a month or so because the goldfish have been the same size ever since i got them so i was thinking maybe they are stunted and i might go back to having them in the 10 gallon and me just changing the water almost every day (30 percent). I am not sure yet.

Thanks.

unsure.gif I don't know if that would actually be a good solution here.I have seen stunted fish eventually grow, once their tank size was increased, and their quality of water is kept pristene consistenly.I had originally had some stunted Lionheads, when I got them that were in poor health. It's taken a good 3 years, but they've actually grown alot more than I ever thought they would. exactly.gif

Even stunted fish can grow a bit more when placed in the right sized tank. Personally I would leave them alone together in the 29 gallon so they can have a chance to grow. You might not see any growth for another 6 months yet, but feed them a varied diet a couple of times a day.
